“Dark Tourism”
Written by John Lennon and Malcolm Foley
The Dark tourism is all about the places associated with war, genocide and other tragic events
that has become tourist destinations. Exploring all the places for them to gather reasons why
tourists visit these attractions. Is it for remembrance of the past? or education? or source of
entertainment?. As I read the book all of the choices that have been said are all true because
Dark Tourism is anticipated in a controversial and fascinating area of tourism. The book covers
the dark tourist destination, The former battlefields and campsites where tragic events occur.
John Lennon and Malcolm are both senior lecturers at the Moffat Centre For Travel and
Tourism they explore how and why people are drawn to places marked by death and suffering.
Figuring out why this kind of places presented and by tourists. The Writers or Author of the book
trace evolution from ancient rituals and pilgrimages to modern-day visit war memorials, disaster
sites and criminal landmarks. By doing this they provide exploration of how society grapples
with death, sorrow and trauma and the memory of tragic events.
There are two parts of Dark Tourism John and Malcolm categorized. First one is “Authentic”
Dark Sites means actual death sites such as (Auschwitz or Ground Zero in New York) Second
is “Incorporated” Dark Sites, where the tragic past commodified for tourism, form of museums or
guided tours. The categorization of the two allows for more structured analysis of the
phenomenon and raises important questions about grief or trauma. They knew that dark sites
are often driven by a desire also for education purposes or historical events. Visiting this kind of
site can cause a cathartic experience, human emotions can be driven by the scene when they
see a memory of a tragic event it can cause flashbacks of what happened. However dark
tourism can serve as a escapism where the tourist seeks to engage with the tragedy from a safe
detach distance. In recent decades, there has been a growing interest in such places linked to
death or tragedy or part of the history. From the Holocaust sites in Europe to the battlefields of
the American Civil War, Dark tourism is now a key component of the global tourism market. The
author Lennon and Malcolm’s book provide insights into the dynamic’s helping industry
professionals understand what’s the reason behind the Dark Tourism. For the tourism and
destination managers, understanding dark tourism can give a lot of insight in all places that
have a history or tragic death and can aid in the creation of responding and respectful
experiences. As for John and Malcolm the balance between education and entertainment
ensuring the dignity of those who died and suffered is not undermined. The book encourages
tourism professionals to reflect on the ethical implications of their work particularly in sensitive
topic like genocide, war and natural disasters.

The Book Dark Tourism written by Malcolm and John provides insight and knowledge but also
critical thinking. The agenda behind the book is about the places that have now become
historical places with death and grief. Many people want to explore this kind of place because of
the history behind it but tourists and visitors need to be prepared emotionally before visiting and
responsibility and sensitivity ensure the dignity of the past is safe. Reading Dark tourism
teaches me to reflect on the complex of human curiosity. Particularly in death and suffering. It
might be unsafe if you first glance at the book but reading it will provide you a lot of insight about
the places where history happens and it helps me understand while some people are drawn to
visit these places.
