SOCIAL - DEFORESTATION

Deforestation, the large-scale clearing of forests for development and other uses, is driven by activities such as burning, tree cutting, plantation clearing, and mining. Its impacts include increased natural disasters, extinction of species, contributions to climate change, and disruption of the water cycle. Preventative measures include selective logging, reforestation, and enhanced forest supervision.

Forests are home to various flora, fauna, and maintain environmental

balance for humans. However, the large amount of deforestation makes the
function of forests less than optimal. Actually, what is deforestation?
Deforestation is the massive cutting of forests that are converted to other uses,
such as development, settlements, plantations, mining, and others.

Causes of Deforestation

1. Forest Burning
This burning does not occur naturally, but is done intentionally by humans. The
purpose of forest burning is to open new land that is used as new land or
settlements. However, this activity causes the tree population in it to burn out.

2. Tree Cutting
Excessive tree cutting for development needs has a negative impact on forests.
This is because trees that are cut down continuously in large numbers cause
forests to decrease until deforestation occurs.

3. Clearing of Plantation Land

The cause of deforestation is also quite large from the results of opening
plantation land such as oil palm, which is done by replacing forest plants with new
plants (oil palm).

4. Mining and Drilling of Natural Resources

Mining and oil drilling activities cause former mining in forest areas where the soil
conditions are already full of holes. If not closed again, the area will have a
negative impact on the quality and change in the function of the environmental
land in the surrounding area.

Impact of Deforestation

The impact of deforestation is clearly felt by communities that are very

dependent on natural resources or forests. As a result, there are great losses for
the entire community and the country.

1. Natural Disasters
Logging activities that ignore forest conversion result in a decrease in
environmental quality and will increase natural disasters, such as landslides and
floods. Deforestation or conversion of mangrove forests which is quite common
on the north coast of Java Island, for example, has been proven to cause tidal
flooding which has an impact that makes people in coastal areas restless.

2. Extinction of Flora and Fauna

Deforestation can also have an impact of flora and fauna. If deforestation
continues, their original habitat will extinct into an area that only benefits for
human activities.

3. Global Warming and Climate Change

The role of forests is to store large carbon reserves. Forests are also able to
absorb excess carbon dioxide in the air and convert it into oxygen through the
process of photosynthesis which can store more than two hundred billion tons of
carbon. If deforestation has a very large impact on climate change related to
carbon in the air and in the soil.

4. Disruption of the Water Cycle

Lost forests will result in reduced evaporation of groundwater by trees. This
condition results in climate and weather that change to be drier, because rainfall
will decrease.

How to Prevent Deforestation?

1. Logging with Selective Cutting System

The selective cutting method is carried out in forests, to select trees that should
be cut down and not. Such as old trees, or damaged, then replanted.

2. Reforestation and Greening

Reforestation and greening efforts include replanting in forest areas, while
reforestation is carried out in non-forest areas, because forests that are
deforested are unable to function properly.

3. Forest Supervision
Supervision is carried out to secure forest assets in preventing and controlling
disturbances, crimes, or threats that cover forests in Indonesia. Supervision can
be carried out directly by authorized officers or by monitoring.
