Arithmetic_Operations (1)
1. Addition (+)
Definition: Addition is the process of combining two or more numbers to get a total sum.
Example: 7 + 3 = 10
Properties of Addition:
1. Commutative Property: a + b = b + a (Example: 4 + 5 = 5 + 4 = 9)
2. Associative Property: (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) (Example: (2 + 3) + 4 = 2 + (3 + 4) = 9)
3. Identity Property: Any number plus 0 remains unchanged (Example: 6 + 0 = 6).
2. Subtraction (-)
Definition: Subtraction is the process of taking away one number from another to find the difference.
Example: 10 - 4 = 6
Rules of Subtraction:
1. A number minus itself equals 0 (Example: 9 - 9 = 0)
2. Subtraction is not commutative (Example: 7 - 3 is not equal to 3 - 7)
3. Subtracting 0 does not change the number (Example: 8 - 0 = 8).
3. Multiplication (×)
Definition: Multiplication is repeated addition of a number.
Example: 4 × 3 = 4 + 4 + 4 = 12
Properties of Multiplication:
1. Commutative Property: a × b = b × a (Example: 3 × 5 = 5 × 3 = 15)
2. Associative Property: (a × b) × c = a × (b × c) (Example: (2 × 3) × 4 = 2 × (3 × 4) = 24)
3. Multiplication by 1 keeps the number the same (Example: 7 × 1 = 7).
4. Division (÷)
Definition: Division is the process of splitting a number into equal parts.
Example: 12 ÷ 3 = 4
Rules of Division:
1. Any number divided by itself is 1 (Example: 9 ÷ 9 = 1)
2. Any number divided by 1 remains the same (Example: 15 ÷ 1 = 15)
3. Division by zero is undefined (Example: 7 ÷ 0 is not possible).
