Project Managers and Teaching Assistants

• Each lab section has a teaching assistant (TA) and a project manager (PM)
– The PM model is representative of the real world

– In most companies, there is a hierarchy of responsibility, with identified supervisors/managers

• Your PMs are senior students who have experience with course projects and with the
uOttawa design spaces. Your TAs and PMs are there to help you be successful!!!

• Specifically, you should use your PMs to help you with:

– Finding missing resources
– Team management

– Project budget/cost

– Schedule/time management

GNG2101 – Introduction to product development and management for engineers and computer scientists
Labs: Don’t Wait - Start Early!
• ALL labs start this week
– Watch ALL the lab videos BEFORE going to the lab

• Attend your mandatory Saturday lab session (at 9am)

– Jan 11th (9:00am or 13:00 depending on your section)

– Email the course instructor well before your session if you (absolutely)
cannot make this session

• You must attend all labs only during your designated lab timeslot,
since capacity in the labs is limited
– Please fix all lab/lecture scheduling issues this week!

GNG2101 – Introduction to product development and management for engineers and computer scientists
Project: Don’t Wait - Start Early!
• You have been assigned a 5-6 person team

• Choose your project topic See Brightspace!

– This term’s theme is accessibility
– The list of suggested topics and customers is posted on BrightSpace
– Sit with your project groups and pick your top 3 projects.
– The instructor will be assigning you project by Friday.
– Groups that do not submit their 3 projects will be assigned one.
– Project deliverable A is due on Sunday Jan 12th. You need the project topic for
the client meet preparation in PD A.

TEAMS

GNG2101 – Introduction to product development and management for engineers and computer scientists
PERSONALITY

GNG2101 – Introduction to product development and management for engineers and computer scientists
Why Does Personality Matter?

• Understanding your “baseline response”

makes you more effective as an engineer or
computer scientist (or maybe even as a
person)
• You should:
– Build awareness of your own personal style, as
well as that of others
– Better understand how your traits help or interfere
with accomplishing your goals when interacting
with others

GNG2101 – Introduction to product development and management for engineers and computer scientists
Personality Dimensions - The Big Five

Open to • Open to liberal ideologies, flexibility in

Experiences thinking, concrete vs abstract

Conscientiousness • Discipline, achievement, striving, order, duty

Extraversion • Assertive, careful, friendly, gregarious

Agreeableness • Cooperation, modesty, sympathy, trust

Neuroticism and • Frustration, anxiety, mood

Emotionality

GNG2101 – Introduction to product development and management for engineers and computer scientists
Assignment 1: Who Are You?

• Assignment 1 lets you measure your own

personality traits (see Brightspace)

• Traits are NOT inherently “good” or “bad”

− What is important is how traits relate to your
outcomes (desired and otherwise!)

• Trait scores should be considered relative to

how you work with others
− Example: How you work with your supervisor

GNG2101 – Introduction to product development and management for engineers and computer scientists
Organization and Punctuality

• Organization is essential to team success

• A positive environment is created by:
– Creating a clear division of labour
– Being aware of deliverable deadlines
– Setting realistic deadlines for each project part

• Studies have shown that people who believe that

their teammates will complete their tasks well and on
time are more successful at completing their own
tasks

GNG2101 – Introduction to product development and management for engineers and computer scientists
Respect, Support and an Open Mind
• Important for each team member to feel valued and
respected
• A safe and secure environment breeds enthusiasm and
creativity
• Maximises everyone’s production energy
• Also important to acknowledge team member weaknesses
and encourage them to improve
• The contract (Deliverable A) will document how the team
will communicate and how they will deal with conflict.

GNG2101 – Introduction to product development and management for engineers and computer scientists
Your Team

• You will be assigned a team based on

your preferences and to maximize
diversity in the team.

• Get to know your team as well as the

strength and weakness of each of you.
– This takes time so start now.

• Research shows that teams that have

a lead, who manages time and tasks
for the team, do better.

• It is critical to identify this lead! Each

team member should try being the
lead (take turns on a weekly basis for
the first few weeks) and agree as a
team on who is the best person to
become the group lead.

GNG2101 – Introduction to product development and management for engineers and computer scientists
Self Assessment and Peer Assessment
• Self Assessment
– Every team will evaluate two of their own project deliverable
submissions.
– The aim is to help teams develop self assessment skills.
– 5% of your course mark is allocated to this.

– The TA will be marking each deliverable.

• If your estimated group mark is within +/-10% of the TA mark
then you get full mark.
• If it is between +/-10-30% then it linearly reduces (100% at
10% and 0% at 30%).
• Peer Assessment
– Each team will be asked to assess 2 other teams in each of PD
C and PD E.
– 2% of your course mark is allocated to this.
– Same mark algorithm applies to the peer evaluation.
GNG2101 – Introduction to product development and management for engineers and computer scientists
Project Management

• Project management is critical element of your project.

• In deliverable A, we will provide you with a skeleton for your project
and you will need to implement it in MS Project.
• On a weekly basis, you are asked to add details to your project
and your TA/PM will be discussing with you and your team your
project progress and how it compares with the previous week.
• There is 5% allocated for project management.
– So be aware and take it seriously from the start.

GNG2101 – Introduction to product development and management for engineers and computer scientists
15 min. Timed Design Exercise – Make the Longest
Pinocchio “Nose”
• Group size: 4 or 5 people per group
• Materials: Two campus newspapers and a maximum of a quarter of a roll of masking tape
• Requirements and Deliverables: One group member (the subject) must wear the nose, which
must be completely self-supporting and as long as possible (in a perpendicular direction to
the plane of the subject’s face)
– Specifically, the subject cannot use his/her hands or arms to hold up or to
otherwise touch the nose structure
– The Nose structure can rest on other body parts but must be attached to the
subject’s nose
• You have 15 minutes:
– 5 Minutes (or less!): Review requirements and choose the group’s subject
– 5 Minutes: Generate ideas and build the long longest “nose”
– 5 Minutes: Iteration and final clean-up before time is up

GNG2101 – Introduction to product development and management for engineers and computer scientists
Trust your instincts and expertise
You normally know more than you think
Even if you don’t know what you don’t know, you can fill in the gaps in your knowledge as you go,
even if you are running out of time
You may not be a design expert just yet, but you are going to become one by learning
and using your personal experience
This assumes that your design is good enough to give you the opportunity to learn from your
mistakes and successes.
