INTRODUCTION
• A passport is a travel document and is being used as a proof of statehood or citizenship.
• Passports serves very important purposes, as they are the primary form of international
travel document and also qualify as legal proof of a person's identity and Indian
citizenship.
• An Indian passport is issued by order of the President of India to Indian citizens for the
purpose of international travel.
• It enables the bearer to travel internationally and serves as proof of Indian citizenship as per
the Passport Act (1967).
CLASSES OF PASSPORTS
CLASSES OF PASSPORTS
1. Official Passport
• It is issued to individuals representing the Indian Government on official business.
• It is a “Type S” passport, where ‘S’ stands for Service.
• It has off white cover.

2. Diplomatic Passport
• It is issued to Indian diplomats, top ranking government officials and diplomatic
couriers.
• It is a “Type D” passport, where D stands for Diplomatic.
• It has maroon cover.

• The CPV Division issues diplomatic and official passports to Indian Government officials
proceeding abroad for official assignments/visits.
• Diplomatic/Official passports are issued with specific validity 5 years or less, depending on the
position of the holder and the nature of assignment/visit.
• The CPV Division also issues visa notes to Indian Government officials going abroad for an
official assignment or visit. Requests for visa notes have to be submitted in the form of a letter
addressed to Joint Secretary (CPV) along with supporting documents related to the official
assignment/visit.
• If the application forms for the Diplomatic/Official passport and/or the visa note requests are in order,
the same would normally be processed in 3-5 working days.
• Diplomatic/Official passports are also issued by RPOs concerned subject to clearance by CPV
Division.

3. Ordinary Passport
• It is issued to citizens of India for ordinary travel such as vacations and business trips.
• It is a “Type P” passport, where P stands for Personal.
• It has navy blue cover.

Person of Indian Origin (PIO)
• A Person of Indian Origin (PIO) means a foreign citizen (except a national of Pakistan,
Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, Iran, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Nepal.
• It has grey cover.

Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI)
• The Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) is an immigration status permitting a foreign
citizen of Indian origin to live and work in the Republic of India indefinitely.
• It has sky blue cover.

Emergency Passport
• Emergency certificate is a one-way travel document that authorizes an Indian citizen to
enter India in an emergency.
• It has white cover.
• Application for renewal of a passport can be submitted if the current passport is scheduled to expire
within twelve months. For example, applicant holding passport valid till 31-12-2015, can apply for
renewal on or after 01-01-2015.
• The validity of a passport cannot be extended beyond the date of its final expiry and a fresh passport
would need to be applied for.
• STUDENTS should submit their application with a letter from the educational institutions where they
are studying, certifying that the HE/SHE is a regular student of that institution.
• An applicant has the option to apply for an ordinary passport booklet of 36 pages or a Jumbo
passport of 60 pages. In both cases, the maximum validity would be 10 years from the date of
issue.
• Minors are issued passport for 5 years or upto the date of attaining 18 years, whichever is earlier.
• It is an offence under the Passport Act 1967 to furnish false information in the application.
• Passport facilities could be denied on grounds of suppression of material information, submission
of incorrect particulars, willful damage/loss of passport or for unauthorized
alterations/tampering.
• The Passport can be impounded or revoked for violation of one or more of the provisions of the
Passport Act.
• It is an offence to hold more than one valid passport at a time.
• An application for renewal of a passport which has expired more than 6 months prior to the date
of application should be supported with a Sworn Affidavit explaining the circumstances and spelling
out the reasons for late submission of application for renewal.
• Indian citizens acquiring citizenship/passport of another country should immediately submit a
declaration of renunciation of Indian citizenship and obtain a Surrender Certificate.

• SPMCIL was formed after corporatisation of nine units including four mints (Mumbai, Kolkata,
Hyderabad and Noida), four presses (Nashik, Dewas, Salboni and Mysore) and one paper mill
(Hoshangabad) which were earlier functioning under the Ministry of Finance.
• India Security Press (Nashik) prints passports, visa stickers and other travel documents for
Ministry of External Affairs. - SPMCIL
