There are 3 types of manufacturing process followed in SAP Production Planning:

1) Discrete Industry
2) Process Industry
3)Repetitive Industry
Discrete Industry Manufacturing Process

In discrete scenario, the manufacturing process is based on production orders. Discrete


manufacturing is characterized by requirements that occur on an irregular basis and a workshop-
oriented process. Basically, the demand and supply varies time to time in this scenario.

Discrete manufacturing forms an industry type where in the products which are manufactured can be
easily assembled and dis-assembled. They can be reworked upon easily to a large extent. You can say
making pumps, engines, cars, airplanes.
Industry Type: Mechanical engineering, Consumer goods, electronics, and many more
Process Industry Manufacturing Process

The component Production Planning for Process Industries (PP-PI) provides an integrated planning
tool for batch-oriented process manufacturing. It is primarily designed for the chemical,
pharmaceutical, food and beverage industries as well as the batch-oriented electronics industry.
Industry Type: Chemical, Pharma, Poultry, Dairy and many more.
Repetitive manufacturing Process

Company manufactures product in large numbers and production is quantity based and period based
not order based. You can use repetitive manufacturing as either make-to-stock REM or make-to-order
REM such as in the automotive industry.

Repetitive manufacturing form an industry type where in the products manufactured can be discrete
manufactured or process industry type, produced repetitively or continuously in production lines. This
forms the continuous production scenario.
Industry Type: Mechanical engineering, Consumer goods, electronics, and many more
SINGLE ORDER STAGING:
"single order staging" refers to preparing materials specifically for one production order at a time,
while "cross order staging" means grouping materials from multiple production orders together to
stage them simultaneously, allowing the staged stock to be used by any of the active orders at that
time, not just one specific order; essentially, single order is dedicated to a single order while cross
order is more flexible and can be used by multiple orders.

Key points about the difference:
Order specificity:
In single order staging, each warehouse task is linked to a specific production order, meaning the
staged materials are only meant for that order. In cross order staging, there's no direct link between the
staged materials and a particular production order, allowing flexibility in usage.

Efficiency:
Cross order staging can be more efficient when multiple production orders require similar materials,
as the system can stage them together in one operation, reducing handling time.

Production Material Request (PMR):


Both methods use PMRs to communicate material requirements, but in single order staging, each
PMR is processed individually, while in cross order staging, multiple PMRs can contribute to a single
staging process.
When to use each method:
Single order staging:
When strict order-specific requirements are needed, ensuring each production order receives exactly
the materials it needs.
Cross order staging:
When there's a high degree of component overlap between multiple production orders, allowing for
optimized warehouse operations by staging materials once for all relevant orders.
