The New Phone Books are Here

I dont know if any of you have seen the old 1979 Steve Martin movie, The Jerk, but the title of this section comes from that movie. Martin plays a dumb guy name Navin R. Johnson who is overwhelmingly excited when he enters the adult world and finds his name printed in the phone book. He runs around excitedly telling everyone, the new phone books are here! Thats sort of the way I feel right now. Not about the phone book, but about the new shipment of books that I just received. They came in late last week, and we got them processed and on the shelf and students have been eagerly snatching them off the new books shelf for the last couple of days. There is a lot to be said about having new materials on the shelf to generate excitement in students for reading. Ive found that anything that is prominently displayed stands a much better chance of getting checked out. Thats why if I love a book, but it doesnt get checked out as much as I think it should; I display it on the top of a shelf, and it gets snatched up within a couple of days. Anyway, come and check out some of the new stuff. There are even some things that might be appealing to adults. That are not just professional reading. I am still waiting on several titles that were on backorder. You can find old issues of the newsletter here. http:// westfieldmiddlepolicies.blogspot.com/

5. 1984 by George Orwell

6. The Clones by Gloria Skurzynski 7. Ghost of Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen 8. Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins 9. The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan 10. Summer Ball by Mike Lupica

What Im Reading Now

Okay, so I havent actually started reading these two yet, but I cant write again about 1Q84 which I am nearly finished with. These are the next two books on my list to read. The Fault in Our Stars is, by all accounts, an amazing book. It is the story of a 16 year old girl who is engaged in a long battle with cancer. She meets a boy, Augustus, who is also battling cancer. They meet at a support group for cancer kids. Their relationship develops quickly despite their conditions. An interesting side note is that the book is set in Indianapolis and uses local landmarks throughout. Also on my nightstand to read next is Zahras Paradise about a young man from Iran who disappears into an extrajudicial black hole following his participation in a protest of the fraudulent 2009 elections. This graphic novel blends fiction and reality by using stories culled from YouTube and Facebook and weaves a fictional story around these true events.

The Book Fair will be here this week. We will officially open on Thursday, March 15 and will run to March 23.

Beyond Bullets will not be cataloged as a professional book but will be on the shelves for students, but I think it could be a great tool for teachers. It is a photo-journal of the Afghanistan war. The book was created by Rafal Gerzak who spent a year embedded with troops in the country. After this year he went back to Afghanistan and continued taking pictures and began keeping a journal of his experiences which he later compiled into this book.

You Must Read This! I think Ive already featured this book, but I thought that in the wake of the school shootings in Ohio, it might be a good time to revisit this one. Columbine is a journalists comprehensive ac-

count of the massacre in Colorado. I dont know if we can ever understand all of the factors that lead to these kinds of tragedies, but books like this one will get us a step or two closer and will maybe keep us working on ways to avoid the next tragedy.

Did You Know? We have a couple of CPS units for check out. These allow students to respond to question items via remote.

World Digital Library http://www.wdl.org/en/ There is really only one word that describes this site: amazing. The site was created with funding from UNESCO as a digital library of world cultural masterpieces. Essentially it is built to give you free access to great works of art, literature, philosophy, history, etc... in its original form. Theyve taken great pains to digitize the primary sources and offer them free of charge and in a multi-lingual format. You can browse by region, topic, or time period. Fantastic if you want to broaden students understanding of culture.
