Rev 2 Prefinals Activity-1

The document outlines a class activity on hydraulics and mechanics, where students must solve assigned problems using their class number as a variable 'X'. Each student is required to complete their work in the classroom, submit a clear picture of their solution in JPEG format via Google Classroom, and ensure their solutions are neat and complete. The document includes specific problems related to hydrostatic forces and axial bars that students need to solve based on their respective class numbers.

PREFINALS ACTIVITY- HYDRAULICS

📌 CLASS ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS

Instructions:

1. Each student will solve the assigned problem using the variable "X", where:
o X is your respective class number.
o Example: for Alingalan, class number is 3, therefore when solving X=3
2. You must solve the problem using your value of X (based on your number in the class list).
3. IMPORTANT:
✅ You must be inside the classroom while doing the activity.
❌ Work done outside the classroom will be voided.
4. Use any clean sheet of paper to solve your problem.
5. Make sure your solution is:
o Neat and complete.
o Shows all steps clearly.
6. Once you're done:
o Take a clear picture of your solution.
o Submit the picture in JPEG (.jpeg) format via Google Classroom.

📷 Make sure the photo is clear and readable.

🕒 Submit before the given deadline.

PROBLEMS:
HYDRAULICS:

Problem 1: Hydrostatic Force on an Inclined Surface

A rectangular gate is submerged in water and inclined at an angle of 45° from the horizontal. The gate is 2 meters wide and
x meters long, where x is your class number. The upper edge of the gate is located 3 meters below the water surface.

Given:

 Water density = 9,810 N/m³

 Inclination = 45°
 Width = 2 m
 Length = x m
 Depth to top edge = 3 m

Questions:

1. Determine the total hydrostatic force on the inclined gate.

2. Compute the depth of the center of pressure from the water surface.

Problem 2: Hydrostatic Force on a Vertical Wall

A rectangular vertical hatch on the side of a water tank is x meters tall and 1.5 meters wide. The top edge of the hatch is
flush with the water surface.

Given:

 Water density = 9,810 N/m³

 Height = x m
 Width = 1.5 m
 Depth to top edge = 0 m (at surface)

Questions:

1. Determine the total hydrostatic force acting on the hatch.

2. Find the location of the center of pressure from the water surface.

Problem 3: Circular Gate - Vertical Plane

A circular gate is placed vertically on the side of a tank and is fully submerged. The diameter of the gate is x meters. The
top of the circular gate is located 2 meters below the surface of the water.

Given:

 Water density = 9,810 N/m³

 Diameter = x m
 Depth to top edge = 2 m

Questions:

1. Find the hydrostatic force on the gate.

2. Determine the position of the center of pressure from the surface of the water.
MECHANICS:

Problem 1: Three-Segment Axial Bar (Different Materials)

A composite axial bar is composed of three segments in series, each made from different materials with varying cross-
sectional areas and lengths.

 Segment A: Steel, Length = 500 mm, Area = 300 mm², E=200 GPa
 Segment B: Aluminum, Length = x mm, Area = 250 mm², E=70 GPa
 Segment C: Brass, Length = 400 mm, Area = 350 mm², E=100 GPa

An axial tensile force of 60 kN is applied.

Questions:

1. Compute the total elongation of the composite bar.

Problem 2: Two Shaft Segments in Series (Solid and Hollow)

A two-segment shaft is fixed at one end and loaded with a torque T = x N·m at the other.

 Segment A: Solid steel shaft, Length = 1.2 m, Diameter = 40 mm, G=80GPa

 Segment B: Hollow aluminum shaft, Length = 0.8 m, Outer Diameter = 50 mm, Inner Diameter = 30 mm, G=27 GPa

Questions:

1. Compute the angle of twist in radians at the free end.

2. Determine the maximum shear stress in each segment.
3. If both materials must experience the same shear stress, what should the diameter of Segment A be adjusted to?
