The following paragraphs will shed light on/address/discuss the benefits as well as the
drawbacks of this prospect.
While there are some upsides to such a prospect, possible drawbacks should not be
ignored/overlooked.
To start, autonomous cars will improve our lives in numerous ways. The most
obvious/immediate/significant benefit has to do with safety. Since such cars are
controlled by computers, there is generally a lower chance of road accidents. This is
because most traffic accidents occur due to human error, so it is safe to say that the
number of these incidences will diminish once humans are removed from the equation.
Beyond that, with automation comes precision. AI-manipulated cars have been claimed
to make better decisions on the road such as picking the most efficient route, speed and
timing of lane switching. Last but not least, environmental sustainability is arguably the
biggest selling point of driverless cars as most of these vehicles in this category are
powered by mostly renewable energy sources.
Nevertheless, cars of the future are not without their drawbacks. Concerns have been
raised over a drastic rise in unemployment resulting from transition to automation in
the transportation industry. Indeed, truck and taxi drivers represent a substantial share
of the workforce, and making these jobs redundant can ultimately hurt the economy.
Price point is another major disadvantage. Most self-driving cars on the market cost
over $50,000, and to put into perspective, this is practically how much an average
American makes annually. Finally, data security can prove to be an insurmountable
challenge to self-driving car manufacturers; a single virtual hack is likely to cause major
setbacks such as traffic hold-ups and possibly, traffic-related deaths.
In conclusion, even though the advantages of autonomous cars range from safety to
environmentally-friendliness, unemployment, affordability and data security make them
a rather disadvantageous option.
