Curve Min Criteria
Curve Min Criteria
2 Vertical Curves
Vertical curves are applied to effect the transition between straight grades. There
are two types of vertical curves, namely crest vertical curves and sag vertical
curves. The major control for the design of vertical curves is the minimum sight
distance required, but also aesthetics, drainage requirements and comfort of vehicle
occup- ants shall be considered.
The form generally adopted for vertical curves is the circle or the simple parabola.
The equations for the circular vertical curve are:
Rv
g1±g2

T =
and Y

The minimum values for vertical curves are determined by the required sight distances.
For crest curves the absolute minimum is decided by the stopping sight distance and
the desirable minimum by the passing sight distance. For sag curves the minimum curve
is decided by the stopping sight distance (see Section 5.2). For a given amount and
type of sight distance the minimum vertical curve radius may be read from Figure
5.4.1.
In addition to the minimum criteria for vertical curves shown on Figure 5.4.1, the
following guidelines should be adhered to:-
-
The lengths of both sag and crest curves should generally be not less than (2 x V)
metres where VD is the adopted design speed in km/h.
