1.2. Aim of this Design Manual

The aim of design shall be to achieve the acceptable probably that structure being designed will perform
satisfactorily during the design span life with an appropriate degree of safety, the structure will sustain all the
loads and deformations of normal construction and use an adequate durability and adequate resistance to the
effects of fire.
The total structure is designed by Limits state method. Characteristic loads with appropriate partial safety factors
are to be considered in the design. The structure shall also be checked for limit state of serviceability.
The main considerations for the design of the structure are:

• Structure safety and stability.

• Demand of aesthetics conceived by the architects.

• Availability of material, equipment & expertise.

• Constructability & ease of architect.

• Durability.

• Economy.

The main units used for the design will be: SI Units.

2. Structural Issues
The structure shall be designed for the largest possible stresses resulting from worst combination of loads which
may act on the structure at the same time.

All steel structures will be designed as per the design method based on IS 800 2007.

• 0.9 Dead Load ± 1.5 (Wind Load)
• 1.2 Dead Load + 1.2 Live Load ± 1.2(Wind Load)
Serviceability Limit State Load Combinations
• 1.0 Dead Load + 1.0 Live Load
• 1.0 Dead Load ± 1.0 (Wind Load)

• IS 800 – 2007: Code of Practice for General Construction in Steel
8.Permissible deflection limits as per IS 800 2007

Deflection limits of members shall generally be as per relevant clause of IS: 800, but with the
following provision –
i) Maximum deflection limit for purlins checked under various combinations of dead loads
and imposed loads is to be restricted to span/150.
ii) For columns in a single storey building, maximum horizontal deflection at the cap of
columns due to worst combination of forces should not exceed Height/150.
ii)Maximum permissible deflection at tip of cantilevers shall be limited to span / 150.
