S23 Modding Guide

Android 13 restricts access to certain files due to its base Files system permissions, but a workaround exists using App Inspector and ZArchiver. Users can uninstall updates to the Files app to regain access to specific folders, although this process must be repeated whenever modifications are needed. This method has been confirmed to work on various Android 13 devices, but complete removal of the Files system requires rooting the device.

Okay, so the cause of Android 13 blocking access to many files is the result

of Android 13’s base Files system. This Files system has permissions
worked into it that prevent end users from modifying folders and files that
Google has determined should not be messed with. Fortunately for us,
while we cannot change these permissions as the end user there is a
work-around available. Here are two things you’ll need:

1). App Inspector

2). ZArchiver

Both can be found on Google Play.

To start with, I am assuming that when you attempt to use ZArchiver to

access com.proximabeta.nikke you’ll end up at a screen that’ll look
something like the following:

https://postimg.cc/vg7q0cdx

If you’re not encountering something like this when using ZArchiver on

Android 13 stop reading this guide, as I’m not going to be able to help you.

Now if you’re still here, our next stop is going to be preventing Android 13’s
Files system from interfering with our desire to mod Nikke. The way we do
this is by uninstalling all updates to Files. Ordinarily you’d be able to just
open your device’s Settings, navigate to your Apps, find Files, and then
click the Clear Data button to uninstall all updates. However, as you can
see in the screenshot below this does not work.

https://postimg.cc/GTT5krjH

So this is where App Inspector comes in. When you open App Inspector,
it's going to locate every single app you have installed on your device. To
find what we’re looking for faster, we’re going to click the magnifying glass
in the upper right to bring up the search bar and search for “Files” like so:
https://postimg.cc/w7rgDTcQ

Once you’ve done so, locate the Files that have a light blue background
and a white folder, as seen in the image above. I’m aware that some users
may have multiple different Files apps they use, so to ensure you have the
correct one you’ll click on each Files app that shows up until you find the
one that says “com.google.android.documentsui” in the Package Name
Field:

https://postimg.cc/Lqbbbn5x

When you’ve found the correct app, you’re going to click the three vertical
ellipsis in the top right and it's going to come up with a sub-menu with
several options. We’re going to want to click “Uninstall” at the very bottom
of this sub-menu:

https://postimg.cc/WFDbBFnz

Doing so is going to uninstall all updates from Android 13’s base file
management system, thus allowing us access to any folder and files we
desire. Now when you open ZArchiver to navigate to
com.proximabeta.nikke, you can actually do so instead of having the earlier
screen with ZArchiver telling you it can’t get permissions for that folder:

https://postimg.cc/yk9dvZQ8

The above screenshot shows that I’m now in com.proximabeta.nikke and I

can navigate to the subfolders the mods need to be placed for them to
correctly work. HOWEVER, there is an additional consideration that needs
mentioning: Any time you want to add or remove Nikke mods, you are
going to have to perform this process all over again. It is currently
impossible to completely remove Android 13’s base Files system without
rooting your device. This means that short of never connecting to the
internet, it is not possible to prevent Files from updating itself in the
background and restricting access to Nikke’s folders. This is a small
annoyance that we’re unfortunately just going to have to deal with. This
work-around has been confirmed to work on both an S23U (my device) and
a Samsung Tablet at the time of this publishing. I am going to operate
under the assumption that this will work on any Android 13 device until
proven otherwise. Hope this helps, and may the jiggle of titties be in your
favor!
