Word Class Note
*Every word belongs to the word class, which summarizes the ways in
which it can be used in grammar.
● Common Nouns
A noun that refers to a general person, place, things or ideas.
● Proper Nouns
A noun that refers to a specific person, place or things and its first
letter is always capitalized.
Ex: John, London
● Collective Nouns
A noun that refers to a group of people, animals or things.
Ex: family, herd, flock
● Abstract Nouns
A noun that refers to a concept or ideas that cannot be physically seen
or touched.
Ex: love, peace, joy
● Concrete Nouns
A noun that refers to something that can be physically seen, touched
or measured.
Ex: tree, house, rock
● Countable Nouns
A noun that can be counted.
Ex: apple, chair, dog
● Uncountable Nouns
A noun that cannot be counted.
Ex: water, sugar, sand
● Compound Nouns
A noun that is made up of two or more words.
Ex: toothbrush, basketball
Types of Adverbs
● Adverbs of Time
Tells when an action happens.
Ex: now,soon,yesterday
● Adverbs of Place
Tells us where an action happens.
Ex: here, there, everywhere
● Adverbs of Manner
Tells us how can action happens.
Ex: softly, gently, quickly
● Adverbs of Degree
Tells us the intensity or extent of an action.
Ex: very, almost, rather
● Adverbs of Frequency
Tells us how often an action takes place.
Ex: always, rarely, often
● Conjunctive Adverbs
Used to connect two independent clauses.
Ex: however, because, therefore

Used to express ownership.
Ex: mine, yours, his
● Personal Pronoun
Used to refer to people, sometimes animals.
Ex: I, you, she, it, they
● Relative Pronoun
Used to connect dependent clauses to independent clauses.
Ex: whom, that, which
● Interrogative Pronouns
Used to ask questions.
Ex: what, whom, who, which, whose
● Demonstrative Pronouns
Used to point to specific things.
