Summary of Procedures
1 After asking the child ‘What’s your name?’, the examiner familiarises the child with the scene picture first, e.g.
‘Where’s the house?’ and then asks the child to point out certain items on the scene picture, e.g. ‘Where is the radio?’
‘Where are the apples?’
The examiner then asks the child to put two object cards in various locations on the scene picture, e.g. ‘Put the kite behind
the plane.’ And then ‘Put the hat between the sheep.’
2 The examiner asks questions about two of the people or things in the scene picture, e.g.
‘What’s this?’ (Answer: frog) ‘What colour is it?’ (Answer: green) ‘How many frogs are there?’ (Answer: three) ‘What’s the
snake doing?’ (Answer: sleeping).
The examiner also asks the child to give more information about an object or person in the scene picture, e.g. ‘Tell me
about the robot.’
3 The examiner asks questions about four other object cards. Various answers are possible, e.g.
‘What’s this?’ (Answer: piano) ‘Can you play the piano?’ (Answer: yes/no) ‘What colour is this piano?’ (Answer: purple).
‘What’s this?’ (Answer: giraffe) ‘Do you like giraffes?’ (Answer: yes/no) ‘What are your favourite animals?’ (Answer:
bears).
‘What’s this?’ (Answer: bread) ‘Do you eat bread for your breakfast?’ (Answer: yes/no) ‘What do you like eating?’
(Answer: ice cream).
‘What’s this?’ (Answer: phone) ‘Who do you talk to on the phone?’ (Answer: my friends) ‘Do you like talking on the
phone?’ (Answer: yes/no).
The examiner then ends the test thanking the child and saying goodbye.
Note that the examiner will use back-up questions to support the child if necessary, e.g. in Part One, ‘What’s your
name?’ – ‘Is your name Maria?’ ‘Where is the house?’ – ‘Is this the house?’
