FACTORS AFFECTING
STUDENTS ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE : A
COMPREHENSIVE STUDY
ABSTRACT
This study looks at the things that affect how well students do in school. It
focuses on three main things, how English skills impact learning, how
school materials like books help students, and how guidance and
counseling support them. The study gathered information through
interviews, group discussion, and checking school records.
The results show that many students struggle with English because it is
the language used in teaching. They have a small vocabulary and weak
English skills, which makes it hard for them to understand. Many students
also waste study time on their phones instead of focusing on schoolwork.
This study gives suggestions to help improve students learning and
performance.
INTRODUCTION
Classroom assessment is an important part of teaching and learning. It
helps teachers check how well students understand lessons and what
they need to improve. Good assessment methods consider that students
learn in different strengths. Teachers should make sure their asessments
help students grow and develop their skills.
According to Vygotsky, students learn best when they get the right
support before doing things on their own. This idea, called the zone of
proximal development (ZPD), means that with proper guidance, students
can improve their thinking and problem-solving skills.
METHODOLOGY
This study employed qualitative case study and the methodology utilized to
explore Filipino students perceptions of factors affecting their academic
performance. The research focused on identifying key challenges such as lack
of study habits, difficulty in English, poor classroom environment, lack of
parental support, and teaching methods.
Participants and Data Collection
The study involved filipino secondary school students as participants. Data
were collected through interviews, surveys, and focus group discussions to
gather their perspectives on academic challenges. The selection of participants
was based on purposive sampling, ensuring that respondants had direct
experiences with the identified academic factors.
Research Instruments
A structured survey questionnaire and guided interview questions were used
to assess students study habits, English proficiency, and learning environment.
The survey included rating scales and open-ended questions to obtain both
quantitative and qualitative data.
Data Analysis
The gathered data were categorized and analyzed thematically to identify
common factors affecting academic performance, as shown in the results and
discussion. The responses were summarized into percentages to quantify how
many students were affected by each challenge, leading to the findings
presented in the study.
These findings suggest that study habits and English proficiency are among the
biggest challenges for students. Many students struggle with understanding
lessons in English, which directly impacts their comprehension in subjects like
Mathematics, Science and etc.
2. Impact of English Proficiency on Academic Performance
Many students students struggle with English, which affects their
understanding of subjects like Science and Math. The results show that 58%
of students find it hard to express themselves in English, leading to lower
performance in class.
CONCLUSION
This study examined the factors affecting students performance, including
English proficiency, availability of learning materials, parental support, and
classroom environment. The results showed that many students struggle due
to a lack of study resources, difficulty in English, and limited parental guidance.
Additionally, poor classroom guidance. Additionally, poor classroom conditions
and ineffective teaching strategies also contribute to lower academic
performance.
To improve student success, schools should provide better learning materials,
enhance teaching methods, and create a supportive learning environment.
Parents should also take an active role in their children’s education by
providing guidance and encouragement. By addressing these factors
