Textbook: APEX Calculus 1 Version 4.0 – Digital version is available for free at the following link: http:
//www.apexcalculus.com/downloads. Physical copies may be purchased from retailers such as Amazon.
It is strongly recommended that you read each chapter of the textbook before the corresponding lecture.

Coursework and Assessments: The weight of each component is given as a percentage value. For due
dates, please see the course calendar posted on Canvas.
• Homework (15%): All homework assignments will be available on WebWork. Each problem may be
attempted up to five times. Extensions will be granted only under extreme circumstances.

• Worksheets (10% + 5%): Worksheets will be given during discussion classes. You may work together
in groups, but everyone must submit their own work by the end of the class. Completed questions
(with all work shown) will receive full credit, and correct answers will receive 150% of full credit.
Thus, up to 5 percentage points of extra credit towards your final grade is available. Partially correct
answers will not receive any extra credit.

• Microtutorials (5%): There are 10 Microtutorial videos posted on Canvas. Two quiz questions are
embedded in each video. You have only one chance to answer each question, but you may rewind the
video before answering.

• Quizzes (20%): Quizzes will be given at the end of certain lectures. See the course schedule for the
dates of the quizzes. Each quiz will cover the material from the homework that is due the same day.
Your lowest quiz score will be dropped from your final grade. Make-up quizzes will not be o↵ered.

• Exams: Two midterms (10% each) and one final exam (30%) will be administered in our lecture hall
on the dates listed below. The final exam is cumulative.

Missed Worksheet, Quiz, or Exam: Absence from a worksheet, quiz, or exam will be excused only if
you can provide verifiable and convincing evidence that you have a significant illness, accident, or serious
family crisis which will prevent you from attending. Except under extremely unusual circumstances, you
must inform me in advance of the missed class. If you miss an exam, you will be expected to promptly make
arrangements with me to take a make-up exam. No make-up quizzes or worksheets will be o↵ered. Instead,
excused quizzes and worksheets will be dropped from your final grade.

Grading Policy: Your final grade will be the weighted average of all your coursework and assessments,
rounded up to the nearest percentage point. The following table specifies the minimum percentage score
corresponding to each possible letter grade above F:

A+ A A– B+ B B– C+ C D

95% 90% 85% 80% 75% 70% 65% 60% 45%

For example, a grade of 74.3% will count as a B. Please note that grades of C–, D+, or D– will not be given.
Grades will not be normalized or “curved.”

Pandemic Accomodations: I am fully committed to providing excellent instruction in spite of the world-
wide crises. That said, I understand that the situation is far from perfect. I would greatly appreciate hearing
suggestions from you about what I might do better, and what your unique circumstances are, especially if
my course plans combined with your circumstances might make it hard for you to succeed.

• Campus Vaccination Policy: All students in this course, as a condition of physical presence in the
classroom (including for exams or tests in the classroom or other location on the UCR campus),
must be compliant with the UC SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Vaccination Program (Program) at all
times. Compliance is easily achieved by providing proof of Full Vaccination or submitting a request
for Exception or Deferral as required by the Program. Students in violation of the Program or related

• Daily Wellness Check Policy: On Monday, March 28, 2022, the Daily Wellness Check will change to
the COVID Screening Check. Employees and students will be required to complete the new COVID
Screening Check if:

– They are reporting the result of a positive COVID-19 test


– They have COVID-like symptoms
– They were exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19
– They are reporting the completion of their required weekly COVID test (if unvaccinated)

• Campus Face Covering Policy: E↵ective Monday, April 11, 2022, UCR will adjust our guidelines for
the use of face coverings to align with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
and state and local health authorities. On that date the use of face coverings indoors will be strongly
recommended for those who are up to date on vaccinations, which includes receiving all recommended
COVID-19 vaccines, including any booster dose when eligible. Face coverings indoors will remain
