imp numerical

The document contains various numerical problems related to fluid mechanics, including calculations for pressure on a circular plate submerged in water, discharge through a venturimeter, force exerted by a water jet on a plate, and flow rates through pipes with given dimensions and conditions. It also discusses concepts such as Darcy's equation, Chezy's equation, and the efficiency of power transmission in pipelines. Additionally, it includes a problem on the efficiency of a centrifugal pump based on its operational characteristics.

A circular plate 1.2m diameter is placed vertically in water so that centre of the plate is 2m below the
free surface. Determine the depth of centre of pressure and total pressure on the plate

) An oil of specific gravity 0.7 is flowing through venturimeter having inlet diameter 35 cm and throat
diameter 20 cm. The oil-mercury differential manometer shows a reading of 30 cm. Calculate discharge
of oil through the horizontal venturimeter. Take Cd = 0.98.

A jet of water of diameter 30 mm moving with velocity of 35 m/s, strikes a curved fixed symmetrical
plate at the centre. Find the force exerted by jet of water in the direction of jet, if jet is deflected
through an angles of 150° at outlet of curved plate. If the vane is moving with the velocity of 20 m/s in
the direction of jet, find out the force exerted.

Find the diameter of a pipe of length 9km, when rate of flow of water through the pipe is 255 litre/sec.
and head loss due to friction is 6.5m. Take C = 55 for Chezy’s formula.

An orifice meter with orifice diameter 20 cm is inserted in a pipe of 40 cm diameter. The pressure
difference measured by a mercury oil differential manometer on the two side of the orifice meter gives a
reading of 60 cm of mercury. Find the rate of flow of oil of specific gravity 0.9, when the coefficient of
discharge of the meter is 0.64

Explain the terms involved in Darcy’s equation, Chezy’s equation for frictional loss, also show that for a
given total head H, the power transmitted through a pipeline connected to a reservoir is maximum when
the loss of head due to friction. hf = H/3 (minor losses can be neglected)

c) A jet moving with a velocity of V m/s is made to strike a stationary (i)

flat plate normally,

(ii) flat plate inclined at an angle q and

(iii) symmetrical curved vane at centre with tip angle q. In which case the force exerted by the jet is
maximum? Justify with suitable sketch and formulas.

Derive an expression for the force exerted by a jet of water on a moving inclined plate. Also draw the
neat sketch. Also find work done.

Let,

d = diameter of jet

a = Area of jet = (π/4) d2

NUMERICAL

V = Velocity of jet before striking the plate

Vsinθ = component of velocity normal to plate

m = mass of water striking the plate per sec in Kg.

m= ρ a V

Fn = Normal force on the plate.

Fn = mass of water X (velocity before impact in the direction normal to plate - Velocity after impact in
the direction normal to plate )

Fn = ρ a V (Vsinθ - 0)

= ρ a V2 sinθ

Fx = Force in the direction of jet = Fn sinθ = ρ a V2 sin2 θ

Fy = Force in the direction normal to the jet = Fn cosθ = ρ a V2 sinθ x cosθ

Work done = 0 …..since plate is stationary

A pipe line 2000 m long carries water having pressure of 50 bar at inlet. The pressure drop over the
length of pipe is 1000 kN/m2. If the power transmitted through pipe is 110 kw and coefficient of friction
is 0.0055, find (i) Diameter of pipe and (ii) Efficiency of transmission.

Given: L= 2000 m, P=50 bar=50 x 105 N/m2,

dP=1000 kN/m2 P=110 kW,

f=0.0055

1 ) Diameter of pipe

Presure head at inlet H = P/ρg =50 x 105 / (1000 x 9.81) = 509.7 m

Loss of head hf=d P/ρg = 1000 x103 / (1000 x9.81) = 101.94 m

hf=fLV2 /2gd

101.94 =0.0055 x 1000x v2 / ( 2 x 9.81 d)

v= 19.06 d1/2

Head availavle at the end of pipe = H-hf

NUMERICAL

Power trasnmitted through pipe P= ρgQ(H-hf)/1000 kW

110 x 103=1000 x 9.81x (П/4) x d2 x v x (509.7 - 101.94)

110 x 103=1000 x 9.81x (П/4) x d2 x d1/2 x (509.7 - 101.94)

d 3/2=0.035

d=0.1069 m

2) Efficiency of power Transmission

η=(H-hf)/H = (509.7-101.94)/509.7= 0.8 = 80%

impeller vanes at outlet = 40°. The impeller runs at 650 rpm and delivers 1.2 cubic meters of water per
second under an effective head of 45 m. A 500 kW motor is used to drive the pump. Determine the
manometric, mechanical and overall efficiencies of the pump. Assume water enters the impeller vanes
