DESIGN CALCULATION FOR LIGHT DUTY SCAFFOLDING:
Height of structure = 14.113 m
Cuplock system scaffolding = independent run tower scaffold
Grid size = 2.0 m x 2.0 m
Height of external scaffolding = 14.113 m
Maximum no”s of planks levels = 1.0 plank level
Maximum no”s of working platform = 1.0 working platform at a time.
Live load rating (light duty): 2.0 kN/m2

MATERIAL:

1) CUPLOCK SYSTEM SCAFFOLDING PROPERTIES:

Outside Diameter “OD” = 60.30 mm

Tube Thickness = 3.91 mm
Yield Strength “Fy” = 241 N/mm2

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF TUBE:

Inner Diameter “ID” = 60.3 mm - 2(3.91 mm) = 52.48 mm

Area of Cross Section “A” = 3.14{(OD)2-(ID)2}/4 = 692.67 mm2
Section Modulus “Z” = (OD)3/6)-(ID3/6) = 12453.069 mm3
Moment Of Inertia “I” = 3.14{(OD4)-(ID4)}/64 = 276506.735 mm4
Radius OF Gyration “r”= Sqrt (I/A) = 19.98 mm

2) LOADING:
Rating of Scaffold = Light Duty Rating
Dead Load (D.L) = Wt of Scaffold Plank + Wt of Ledger +Wt of standard+ Accessories
Live Load (L.L) = 2.0 kN/m2 (42 psf) as per SSH

3) CHECK FOR PLANKS:

Length of plank = 2.15 m
Self-weight of plank = 0.25 kN/m2
Live load = 2.0 kN/m2
Load on plank W = 0.225 m * (0.25 kN/m2+ 2.0 kN/m2) = 0.506 kN/m
M = (W*L2) / 8 = 0.506 kN/m*(2.15m)2 / 8 = 0.29 kN-m
Max allowable BM for 38mm thick plank as per TG 20:08 table 18 = 0.48 kN-m
BM permissible = 0.48 kN-m > 0.29 kN-m (Safe)

4) SAFE WORK LOAD ON STRANDS:

Load Carry Capacity of Cuplock Standard Per Vertical Leg.
Properties Of Vertical Standard Pipes
Using Allowable Stress Design (ASD) Formulas from AISC, ASD Manual (9th Edition)

Outer Diameter “OD” = 60.30 mm

Tube Thickness = 3.91 mm
Cross Section “A” = 692.67 mm2
Radius OF Gyration “r” = 19.98 mm
Fy = Minimum Yield Strength = 241 N/mm2
Maximum vertical lift Height of ledger = 2.0 m
Unbraced Length “L” = 2000 mm
Effective Length “Leff”= K*L = 1.0*2000 = 2000 mm
Slenderness Ratio Leff /rmin =2000/19.98 = 100.100
Modulus of Elasticity “E” = 200000 N/mm2
Euler Critical Stress Cc = Sqrt (2x (π)2X E)/Fy = Sqrt (2x (3.14) 2 x 200000 / 241 = 127.92 N/mm2

Leff/rmin < Cc

Allowable Stress {Corresponding to Leff/rmin = 100.100

Fa = [FY*(1-1/2*(KL/R)2/CC2] / [5/3+3/8*(KL/R)/CC-1/8*(KL/R)3/CC3]
Fa = [241*(1-1/2*(100.100)2/(127.92)2] / [5/3+3/8*(100.100)/127.92 -1/8*(100.100)3/(127.92)3]
Fa = 87.997 N/mm2
Allowable Load Carry Capacity per Vertical “Pf”= Fa x A
Pf = 87.997 x 692.67 / 1000 = 60.95 kN
5) CHECK VERTICAL POST (STRANDS):
Tributary Area A1= (1.0*1.0) = 1.0 m2
Dead Load (D.L) Calculation on one Vertical Standard (Post)
Note: 1 Plank Levels to be boarded only

No Item Quanti U.Wt (kN) Total Weight

ty (kN)
1 3 m Standards + Cups Cup lock @ 400 mm 20 0.049 0.98
(Strands 18 L.m.)
2 Spigot With Nuts/Bolts attach to standard 6 0.005 0.03
3 Cup lock Ledger 2.0 m LEDGER 30 0.0971 2.913
and 2.0 m 30 0.0971 2.913

Total Dead Weight = 6.836 kN

Add 10% For Bracing & Fitting and Tying = 0.4893 kN
Scaffold Board (0.25 kN/m2 x 2.0 m x 2.0 m) @ 1 level = 1.0 kN
Total Dead Load (D.L) = 8.33 kN

Total Live Load on one Standard (L.L) = 2.0 kN /m2 x 2.0 m x 2.0 m = 8.0 kN
Total Load on Vertical Standard (D.L.+L.L) = 6.836 kN + 8.0 kN = 14.84 kN

6) CHECK FOR WIND LOAD:

The Wind load calculation is in accordance with NSCP 2015 Section 207C.3.2 page 2-106
Velocity Pressure, qz = 0.613 Kz Kzt Kd V2, N/m2

Where;

Kd = wind directionality, 0.85 (see table 207A.6-1, NSCP page 2-42)

Kz = velocity pressure coefficient, 0.81 (see table 207C.3-1, NSCP page 2-112)
Kzt = topographic factor, 1.0 (see section 207A.8.2, NSCP page 2-47)
V = basic wind speed, 61.11 m/s (As per NSCP wind code, NSCP page 2-38)
Therefore;

Velocity Pressure = 0.613 x 0.81 x 1.0 x 0.85 x (61.11 m/s)2

Velocity Pressure = 25.79 N/m2 or 0.026 kN/m2
7) CHECK OF BUCKLING OF COMPRESSION MEMBER:

P (D.L+L.L) = Load due to (Dead Load+ Live Load) Per Leg.

Pf = Allowable Load due to Allowable Stress (Fa) Per Leg.
Load combination = 1.2*DL + 1.6*LL + 0.5*W
P (D.L+L.L+ W.L) = 1.2*(8.33 kN)+1.6*(8.0 kN)+0.5*(0.026 kN)
Pf = 60.95 kN < 22.809 kN (Safe)

8) CHECK FOR COUPLER CONNECTION WITH BRACING:

Considering 2.5 % of vertical load = 22.809 x 0.025 = 0.57 kN x 2.0 (Safety factor)
Capacity of coupler in slip = 5 kN > 1.14 kN (Safe)

9) CHECK FOR BRACING:

ALLOWABLE SHEAR FORCE CAPACITY (Bearer, Transom, & Runner &Tube).

Vc = Allowable shear capacity = 0.4 x Fy x SIF x A

Fy = Minimum yield strength = 235 N/mm2
A = Area of C/S of tube.
Vc = 0.4 x 241 x 1.2 x (692.67/1000) = 80.13 kN.

ALLOWABLE FLEXURAL MOMENT (Bearer, Transom, & Runner & Tube).

Mf = SIF x Fy (min) x Z
Mf = allowable flexural moment.
SIF = Strength increase factor (Max SIF : 1.20, actual Yield strength as per test result is 241 MPa)
Z = Plastic section modulus
Fy = Minimum yield strength = 241 N/mm2
Mf = 1.20 x 241 x 12453.069 x 10-6 = 3.60 kN-m

Self-weight of the tuber = 0.039 kN/m

Loads of plank = 0.25*0.225 = 0.0562 kN/m
Live load = 2.0 kN/m2*1.0 m = 2.0 kN/m

Total load = 0.0562 + 2.0 + 0.039 = 2.09 kN/m

Maximum Bending moment = (W*L2)/8 = (2.09*2.02)/8 = 1.045 kN-m

Maximum Allowable permissible bending moment = 3.60 kN-m > 1.045 kN-m (Safe)

Maximum shear Force = (W*L)/2 = (2.09*2.0)/2 = 2.09 kN

Maximum Allowable permissible shear capacity = 2.09 < 80.13 kN (Safe)

Allowable Deflection = L/240 = 2000/240 = 8.33 mm

Max. Def. = (5*2.09*2000*2000*2000*2000) / (384*210000* 276506.735) = 7.5 mm < 8.33 mm (Safe)
