INFO-1212 Securing Windows System

Lab# 4
This lab illustrates concepts found in Week#4of the course.

Hands-on Exercise 4.1, Creating Encrypted folder


1. On Toronto01 server, open C:\\drive\Info1212 folder.
2. Create a folder inside Info1212 drive called “John’s File”
3. Right click on John’s File folder then properties
4. General tab, click on Advance to Open Security Attributes
5. Check the box for Encrypt contents to secure data, click OK, Ok. See Figure #1
6. Login on Win10 as John and Create a text file inside John’s File called “File#1”
7. Inside File#1 type Hi Everyone, save the file and close.(You should see a lock on the
fil)
8. Ctrl+ Alt+Del, Switch user, Login with Olivia.Colman On Win10
9. Again, Open CMD and type gpupdate /force
10. Go to INFO-1212 Open the file “John Files”
11. Double click on File#1 “are you able to open the file”? Take a full screenshot of your screen

12. Inside John’s file Create a new text file called “Olivia Note” Type Hi John save and close the file.

13. On Win10 Ctrl+ Alt+Del, Switch user, Login back with John.
14. Do you see “Olivia Note” file? Can you read the note? (Take a full screenshot of the
error message).
15. Lets test an try to change the file’s permissions.
16. As John user, Right click on Olivia Note Text file then properties.
17. General tab, click on Advance to Open Security Attributes
18. Uncheck the box for Encrypt contents to secure data, click OK, Ok.
19. You will have to get administrator’s permission, cancel (Take a screenshot of the Access
Denied).

Hands-on Exercise 4.2, Working with File History in Windows 10
Creating a shared folder
1. Login to Server 2019 as the Administrator.
2. Use Windows Explorer. Under drive C: create a folder called Backup and inside Backup folder
create a folder called Malqarni.
3. Right-click on Backup, properties. Under the Sharing Tab click Sharing Add only Malqarni User.
4. Under the Sharing Tab click Advanced Sharing, Check Share this folder. Click Permissions.
5. Select Everyone and click Remove. Click Add. For the object name type in Authenticated Users. Click
Check Names. Click OK. Click Add. For the object name type in Malqarni. Click Check Names. Click OK.
With Mansour Alqarni selected, check the Full Control box under Allow.

((Make sure Malqarni is a user in your domain or add a new user)).


7. Click OK 3 times to exit.

Enable file history


8. On Win10 again but logon as Malqarni.
9. Use the search function to open WordPad.
10. Type a few lines and save the file as a Rich text document in Documents with the name TestDoc.
11. Using File Explorer navigate to Documents, find TestDoc.rtf and open its properties. Click on
Previous Versions, do you see any? You should see no previous files. Close the window.
12. In File Explorer select This PC. In the top menu bar click on Computer. From the lower menu bar
select Map network drive. See Figure#2
13. For the Drive select M: For the folder, type in \\Toronto01\backup. Click Finish.

14. In Win10 Search box bar field type in restore your files with File History and go there. Click on
Configure File History settings.
15. Select a network location > Add network location navigate to this pc select the mapped drive
\\torontot01\backup\ and click Select Mansour Folder. Click OK.
16. Click Turn On. Close all windows. (Take a screenshot of the file history)

Be aware that with Windows 10 you can only backup to another device, such as a USB device, or a
network location. By default, all of the folders under the user’s profile will be backed up.

17. Click Ok, then Turn ON. Then Click Run NOW.

18. Click on Advanced settings.


19. Change Save copies of files to 3 hours. Change Keep saved versions to Until space is needed.
20. Save changes.

21. Open TestDoc. Type anything in a second line and save. Open the properties of TestDoc. Using the
Previous Versions tab, is an earlier copy of TestDoc listed? (Take a screenshot)

22. In File Explorer find \\torontot01\backup\mansour. Navigate to


M:\Malqarni\[email protected]\WIN10\Data\C\Users. Confirm that Mansour’s profile has

been backed up. (Take a screenshot of the Mansour’s backup files)
