Trigonometry Word Problems #1
1. Find the angle of elevation if you are standing 400 ft. away and the building is 850 ft.
tall? What is the angle at half-way up the building?

2. A ladder leaning against a house makes an angle of 30° with the ground. The foot of
the ladder is 7 feet from the foot of the house. How long is the ladder?

3. You are a block away from a skyscraper that is 780 feet tall. Your friend is between
the skyscraper and yourself. The angle of elevation from your position to the top of
the skyscraper is 42°. The angle of elevation from your friend’s position to the top of
the skyscraper is 71°. To the nearest foot, how far are you from your friend?

4. Use the diagram below to find the distance across the suspension bridge.
5. Ramps The Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards specify that the ramp angle
used for a wheelchair ramp must be less than or equal to 4.78°.The length of one
ramp is 16 feet. The vertical rise is 14 inches. Estimate the ramp’s horizontal
distance and its ramp angle.
a. Does this ram meet the Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards?
b. You want to build a ramp with a vertical rise of 6 inches. You want to
minimize the horizontal distance taken up by the ramp but still meet the
Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards. Draw a sketch showing the
approximate dimensions of your ramp.

6. The angle from the tee box to the green is 10° on a par 3, 185 yard hole as shown.
How much higher is the tee box than the green? Round to the nearest yard.

7. You are flying a kite and have let out 80 m of string. The kite’s angle of elevation
with the ground is 40°. If the string is stretched straight, how high is the kite above
the ground?

8. You are watching a fireworks display where you are standing 290 feet behind the
launch pad. The launch tubes are aimed directly away from you at an angle of 65°
with the ground. The angle for you to see the fireworks is 40°.

a. To the nearest foot, what is the horizontal distance from the launch pad to
the point where the fireworks explode?
b. To the nearest foot, what is the height of the fireworks when they explode?
c. What is the measure of angle A?
9. You are stationed at a radar base and you observe an unidentified plane at an
altitude h = 2000 m flying towards your radar base at an angle of elevation = 30o.
After exactly one minute, your radar sweep reveals that the plane is now at an
angle of elevation = 60o maintaining the same altitude. What is the speed (in m/s)
of the plane?

10. If the distance of a person from a tower is 100 m and the angle subtended by the
top of the tower with the ground is 30o, Calculate the height of the tower in
meters?

11. Find the area of the trapezoid

12. A sledding run is 300 yards long with a vertical drop of 27.6 yards. Find the
angle of depression of the run.
13. Find the angle of elevation of the sun when a 12.5 meter tall telephone pole casts
an 18 meter long shadow.

14. A student wants to know how tall the flagpole at her school is, her eye level is 5.5
feet above the ground and she stands 36 feet from the base of the flagpole. If the
angle of elevation is 25°, what is the height of the flagpole?

15. A golfer is standing at the tee, looking up to the green on a hill. If the tee is 36
yards lower than the green and the angle of elevation from the tee to the hole is
12°, find the distance from the tee to the hole.

16. A person is sitting on a 30 foot pier overlooking the ocean. His eye level is 3 feet
above the pier. He sees a whale surface in the ocean. If the angle of depression
of the whale is 20°, how far is the whale from his eyes?

17. During its approach to Earth, the space shuttle’s glide angle changes.

a. When the shuttle’s altitude is about 14.5 miles, its horizontal distance to
the runway is about 52 miles. What is the glide angle? Round your answer
to the nearest tenth.
b. When the space shuttle is 6 miles from the runway, its glide angle is about
21 degrees. Find the shuttle’s altitude at this point in its descent. Round
your answer to the nearest tenth.
18. The altitude to the base of an isosceles triangle is 17 inches long. The measure
of a base angle is 41o. Find the measure of the base to the nearest inch.

19. Before Apollo 11 descended to the surface of the moon, it made one orbit at a
distance of 3 miles above the surface of the moon. At one point in its orbit, the
onboard guidance system measured the angles of depression to the near and far
sides of a huge crater. The angles measured 25° to the near side of the crater,
and 18° to the far side of the crater. Find the distance across the crater.

20. A mountain has a base and peak that are inaccessible. At point A, the angle of
elevation of the peak is 30°. One kilometer closer to the mountain, at point C, the
