FOUNDATION ENGINEERING (3160616)
ASSIGNMENT – 2 (CO2)
SHALLOW FOUNDATION
Level
1. Explain factors affecting the bearing capacity of shallow foundation. How will you U
ascertain whether the foundation is likely to fail in local shear or general shear?
2. Distinguish between general shear & local shear failure with neat sketch. N
3. Explain shear failure. U
4. Explain the plate load test. U
5. Define assumptions made in the theory of Terzaghi’s analysis R
6. Explain the method for determination of bearing capacity using IS code specification. U
Discuss the term “permissible settlement”.

7. Explain any one method of improving bearing capacity of soil. U

8. Discuss the changes to be carried out for bearing capacity calculation with respect to rise in U
water table up to the ground level.

9. Compute the safe bearing capacity of a square footing 2×2 m , located at a depth of 2 m E
below the ground level in a soil of unit weights γ t= 17KN/m3; γsat= 19KN/m3,c=0, kpa,
φ=20˙,Nc=17.7,Nq=7.4,Nγ=5. Assume a suitable factor of safety. The water table is very
deep. If the water table touches the base of the footing, find the reduction in safe bearing
capacity.

10. A strip footing 1.5 m wide, rests on surface of a cohesion less soil having φ=20˙, E
γt=16KN/m3, γsat= 18 KN/m3. If water table rises temporarily to the surface due to
flooding, Calculate the percentage reduction in the ultimate capacity of the soil. Assume
Nq=7.4, Nγ=5.

11. A strip footing 2.5 m wide at its base is located at a depth of 1.5 m below the ground E
surface. Foundation soil: γ= 1.8 t/m3, c= 3t/m2 & angle of internal friction = 20degree.
Determine the bearing capacity using FS= 3. Considering the same soil, compute the depth
at which square footing of 2.5m×2.5m should be located. Take for angle of internal friction
= 10 degree. Nc’=10, Nq’=4, Nγ’=1.

12. A strip footing 1.2m wide is to be laid at a depth of 1m below the ground surface in deposit E
of very fine sand having bulk density = 1.8t/m 3; angle of internal friction = 27 degree.
Calculate the safe bearing capacity if FS=3. What width of footing is required to lay it at a
depth of 0.5m from ground surface? Take Nq’= 7, Nγ’=5.

13. a strip footing 1m wide at its base is located at a depth of 0.8m below the ground surface. E
The properties of the foundation soil are γ=18Kn/m 3, c=30KN/m2 & φ= 20˙. Determine the
safe bearing capacity using a factor of safety of 3. Use Terzaghi’s analysis. Assume that the
soil fails by local shear.

14. Using Terzaghi’s theory, determine the ultimate bearing capacity of a strip footing 1.5m E
wide resting on saturated clay. C=30KN/m 2, φ=0, γsat=20KN/m3 at a depth of 2 m below
ground level. The water table is also at a depth of 2m from the ground level. If the water
table rises by 1m, Calculate the percentage reduction in the ultimate bearing capacity.

15. A rectangular footing has a size of 1.8×3m to transfer a column load to a depth of 1.5m. E
Calculate the safe load which the footing can carry at a factor of safety of 3 against shear
failure. Use IS code method. The soil has n=40%, G=2.67, w=15%, c=8KN/m 2, φ=32.5˙.
take Nc=38.13, Nq= 25.85, Nγ=35.21

16. Determine the safe bearing capacity of a strip footing 1.5m wide & 1.5m depth resting on a E
dry sand bed. Consider γsand=18KN/m2 and bearing capacity factors Nc=35.5, Nq=23.2,
Nγ=22, corresponding to φ=38˙ and factor of safety=3
