ii) A sewing machine needle moves with a rapid vibrator motion, like SHM, as it sews a seam. Suppose the
needle moves 8.4mm from its highest to its lowest position and it makes 24stiches in 9.0s. What is the
maximum needle speed?
iii) Derive the second equation of motion using velocity-time graph.
iv) The small piston of hydraulic press has an area of 10.0cm2. If an applied force is 50.0N is exerted what
must be the area of the large piston to exert a pressing force of 4800N?
v) Define angle of friction and angle of repose & also relate them.
vi) A wire of length 12m and uniform cross-section 4x10-3cm2, has a resistance of 6.0Ω. Calculate the
resistivity of the material.
vii) Derive a relationship between resultant torque and angular acceleration for both a single particle and
system of particles.
viii) A proton and an electron form two corners of an equilateral triangle of side length 2μm. Calculate the
magnitude of the net electric field intensity at the third corner? (Use K = 9x109Nm2/C2, e = 1.6x10-19C)
ix) State and prove work-energy theorem.
x) An increase in pressure of 0.1MPa causes a certain volume of water to decrease by 5x10-3% of its original
volume. Find:
(a) Bulk modulus of water.
(b) The speed of sound in water? (Density of water is 1000kg/m3)
xi) Define drag force and terminal velocity. Derive an expression for terminal velocity for a spherical body.
xii) Define electric field intensity and electric potential. Prove that electric intensity is equal to negative of
potential gradient.
xiii) A diffraction grating produces a first-order spectrum at an angle of 30° when the wavelength of light is
60μcm. How many lines per millimeter are there in the grating?
xiv) State Kirchhoff’s first & second law about current and voltage. Explain any one of them.

SECTION C (DETAILED ANSWER QUESTIONS) (32 Marks)

NOTE: Attempt any nine-part questions from this section. Each question carries 16 marks.

Q3) a. What is the difference between streamline flow and turbulent flow? Define an ideal fluid and (08)
derive the Equation of Continuity.

b. Define interference of light. Explain Young’s double slit experiment and derive formulas for (08)
distance of the fringe from the center of the screen(Y) and fringe spacing(Y)

Q4) a. Derive Newton’s formula for speed of sound and explain how it is corrected by Laplace (08)
correction.

b. Define projectile motion and state the assumptions that simplify its analysis. Derive the formulas (08)
for the maximum horizontal and vertical displacement of a body projected in the XY-plane with
an initial velocity u at an angle ɸ to the vertical.

Q5) a. Define Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM) and state its characteristics. Prove that the projection of (08)
Uniform Circular Motion (UCM) along any of its diameters is an example of SHM.

b. Define the Doppler Effect and derive the formula for the apparent frequency in terms of true (08)
frequency for the following cases:
i) When the listener is moving away from a stationary source
ii) When the source is moving toward a stationary listener
