UNIT-3 Dimensions of Physical Quantities

The document explains the concept of dimensions and dimensional formulas, which represent the powers of base quantities in physical quantities. It includes examples of dimensional formulas for various physical concepts such as mass, force, and energy, as well as rules for operations involving dimensions. Additionally, it discusses dimensionless quantities and provides examples for writing dimensional formulas for different physical quantities.

DIMENSIONS & DIMENSIONAL FORMULA

Dimensions

Dimensions of a physical quantity are the powers (or exponents) to

which the base quantities are raised to express that quantity.
DIMENSIONS & DIMENSIONAL FORMULA

Dimensional Formula
The dimensional formula of any physical quantity is that expression
which represents how and which of the base quantities are included in
that quantity.

It is written by enclosing the symbols for base quantities with appropriate

powers in square brackets.

MASS [M1L0T0]

MOMENTUM [M1L1T-1]
FORCE [M1L1T-2]
DIMENSIONS & DIMENSIONAL FORMULA

Dimensional Equation
The equation obtained by equating a physical quantity with its
dimensional formula is called a dimensional equation.

For example:

[MASS] = [M1L0T0] is a Dimensional Equation.
