Abstract:-
 Background of the Project
Sparsha NGO, based in Sion, Mumbai, works with underprivileged communities to provide
education, healthcare, and community development. The project focused on understanding
the challenges faced by these communities and contributing to Sparsha’s mission through
direct engagement.
 Project Objective and Scope
The objective was to empower children from underprivileged backgrounds by addressing
barriers to education and involving their families in the process. The scope included
conducting surveys, interactive activities with children, and identifying actionable
recommendations.
 Project Profile
As part of the project, our team of 15 students visited Sparsha NGO, interacted with children,
and participated in activities such as games, storytelling, and data collection. The focus was
on understanding the root causes of school dropouts and proposing sustainable solutions.
 Learning Experiences
The internship fostered teamwork, empathy, and problem-solving skills. We developed
confidence through communication with families and NGO staff, gained awareness of
societal challenges, and strategized solutions for educational access.
 Recommendations
1. Expand local collaborations for funding and resources.
2. Introduce tech-based learning tools and workshops for parents.
3. Provide incentives like healthcare support for families sending children to school.
 Perception Before
We anticipated a structured environment with a clear focus on education but underestimated
the socioeconomic challenges faced by families.
 Perception After
The experience broadened our perspective, instilling a sense of purpose and compassion. It
highlighted the resilience of communities and the transformative power of education.

Overview of Sparsha Charitable Trust:
Sparsha Charitable Trust (SCT) is a non-profit organization located in Sion, Mumbai. The
term "Sparsha" translates to "touch" in many Indian languages, embodying the trust’s mission
of reaching out and positively impacting the lives of underprivileged communities. The
organization aims to provide access to basic human needs and foster holistic development
through the following programs:
Parent Counselling Program: This program focuses on educating parents about their role in
shaping their children's educational and personal growth. It aims to build awareness and
equip parents with tools to support their children effectively.
Community Outreach Program: Through regular engagement with local communities,
Sparsha identifies their needs and designs tailored interventions.
Learning Support Program: By offering academic support, resources, and a nurturing
environment, Sparsha ensures children from disadvantaged backgrounds can excel in their
education.

Core Objectives and Programs


Sparsha Charitable Trust works with a vision to uplift underserved communities by
addressing key areas such as education, healthcare, and community well-being. The
organization’s primary initiatives include:
Education Program:
 Ensures children’s right to education, regardless of financial or social barriers.
 Provides supplementary learning materials, mentorship, and emotional support to
students.
Community Development Program:
 Promotes skills development and community empowerment to improve living
standards.
 Organizes awareness drives on hygiene, sanitation, and child welfare.
Health Program:
 Offers free healthcare services, including medical check-ups, vaccinations, and health
awareness workshops.
 Addresses critical health challenges within the community to enhance overall well-
being.
Internship Activities and Structure:
Fourteen students were selected to participate in this internship program. They were divided
into smaller groups of 4-5 members, each supervised by a dedicated coordinator to ensure
effective task management and learning. The structured activities included:
Visits to Sparsha NGO: Interns visited the organization’s premises and interacted with
children aged 5-6 years, fostering a fun and supportive environment.
Engaging Activities: Designed creative sessions, such as games, poems, storytelling, and
hands-on learning to stimulate interest and curiosity among the children.
Surveys and Research: Conducted door-to-door surveys to assess socio-economic
challenges faced by families and identified reasons for school dropouts.

Key Learnings
1. Orientation and Initial Training
 The program commenced with an in-depth orientation session conducted by Kshitija
Ma'am, Senior Administrator of Sparsha. This session:
 Provided an overview of the trust’s mission, values, and goals.
 Set clear expectations for interns’ roles and responsibilities.
 Highlighted the importance of community engagement and the ethical considerations
involved.

2. Development of Core Skills


Teamwork:
The internship required close coordination among team members to achieve group objectives.
Interns learned the significance of effective communication and adaptability in collaborative
settings.
Communication:
Regular interaction with children, parents, and staff helped interns enhance their interpersonal
and verbal communication abilities.
Interns practiced active listening and empathetic engagement to build trust and rapport with
the community.
Problem Solving:
Addressed challenges such as identifying barriers to education, including financial hardships
and cultural biases.
Devised practical solutions, such as recommending support systems for parents and creating
incentives for school attendance.

3. Empathy and Cultural Sensitivity


Gained a profound understanding of the struggles faced by underprivileged families,
particularly in accessing education and healthcare.
Recognized the systemic issues contributing to inequality and developed a compassionate

recommendations are proposed to enhance Sparsha’s impact:

educational programs.
 Seek sponsorships for essential resources like textbooks, uniforms, and digital
learning tools.

Workshops for Parents:


 Conduct frequent workshops to educate parents about the long-term benefits of
education.
 Include specific sessions focused on empowering parents to support the education of
girl children, addressing gender disparities.

Incentivize Education:
 Offer small incentives, such as ration supplies or free healthcare services, to families
ensuring their children’s regular school attendance.
 Introduce recognition programs for students with excellent attendance or
performance, encouraging sustained engagement.
Leverage Technology:
 Introduce e-learning modules and virtual classrooms to complement traditional
teaching methods.
 Use digital platforms for community outreach and awareness campaigns.

Internship Experience: Reflections and Impact
