Test 2 Rare Super Bluemoon

This week, a rare blue supermoon will occur, which is the second full moon in a month coinciding with the moon's closest approach to Earth. The last blue supermoon was in 2009, and the next will not be until 2037, making this a significant event for moon enthusiasts. The supermoon will appear about 17% larger and 30% brighter than a normal full moon, with its peak visibility at 9:36 p.m. Eastern time on Wednesday.

IT’S BIG! IT’S BRIGHT! IT’S A RARE SUPER BLUEMOON!

ARI SHAPIRO, HOST:

Those who love a beautiful night sky and a famous idiom have reason to celebrate
this week. We'll be treated to a display that only happens once in a blue moon. A
blue moon is the rare second full moon in a month, and this blue moon comes with
a bonus. The Earth's lunar 1.________will appear especially big and bright as it
reaches its fullest phase on Wednesday, making it a blue supermoon. NPR's Emily
Olson explains.

EMILY OLSON, BYLINE: You might not guess it just going off the name, but a
supermoon alone isn't really that rare.

DAVE TESKE: Well, the moon goes around the Earth in a rather
2._______________. And when the full moon occurs when the moon is closest to
the Earth, they call it a supermoon.

OLSON: That's Dave Teske. He's a 3.___________with the Association of Lunar

and 4.______________. He says that supermoons happen about two to four times
each year, but it's only once every two years or so that we get two full moons in a
single month. We call that second full moon a blue moon.

TESKE: And when you have them at the same time, it's a blue supermoon.

OLSON: The last time we had a blue supermoon was in 2009, and we won't see
another one again until 2037. So moon lovers won't want to miss it, even if it only
looks a little different to the 5._______________.

NOAH PETRO: Supermoons can be about 17% larger than a normal full moon
and 30% brighter.

OLSON: That's NASA research scientist Noah Petro. He says that 9:36 p.m.
Eastern time on Wednesday night is when the moon will be at its absolute fullest
and closest, about 220,000 miles away from Earth. But if you can't see it right then
or if clouds get in the way, you can still catch a very bright and full moon up until
Friday. And the astronomers say that even if you can't see it perfectly, the lunar
show can still give you 6.______________ just because it connects you with other
7.____________all over the world.

PETRO: It's one thing that is shared by every sighted person on the planet, whether
you're in the 8.________________or you're in Indonesia or you're in an island in
the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The moon is something that everyone has an
opportunity to look at and is shared.

OLSON: But if you really want to check out the 9._____________of the lunar
surface, you might want to dust off that telescope or binoculars or maybe head to a
dark spot free of trees and tall buildings. Emily Olson, NPR News.
