urinary system - Copy

The document is a web site journal summarizing three medical websites focused on the urinary system. Each site provides detailed information about the structure and function of the urinary organs, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra, along with interesting facts about their roles in the human body. The journal also includes personal reflections on the usefulness of each site for understanding human anatomy and physiology.

Site # 1 name: Cincinnati Children’s

Site address:
https://www.cincinnatichildrens.org/health/u/urinary-
system

Describe the purpose and content of the site (summarize):

The site also has detailed procedures for the functioning of each
organ of the urinary system with special emphasis on the
filtration of wastes, formation of urine, and overall balance in
the body. It discusses the kidneys, the tubes that connect the
kidney to the bladder/ureters, the bladder, and the urethra about
how these organs help filter out unwanted substances such as the
urea, excess salts, and water. It also briefly discusses hormonal
aspects of kidney function and the mechanisms of urine
transportation, as well as the anatomy and function of muscles
involved in the urinary incontinence process.
Was the site useful to you? Why or why not?

For instance, the site would be helpful for someone, who wants
to understand the concept of the human body, especially while
focusing on the urinary system because the site provides
complete information on every component that belongs to the
system under analysis and their mutual connection. It simplifies
the mechanisms of human anatomy and physiology to analyze
various interrelated subtopics and get more information about
the function of the urinary system in providing the body with
balance.

List three interesting facts that you learned from the site.

1. It is produced in the kidneys and it stimulates the

production of red blood cells.

2. Two kidneys are present in the body and each kidney

consists of several nephrons which actually filtration
process from the blood and form urine.

3. The muscles in the walls of the ureters compress to

prevent urine back flow leading to kidney infections.

Site # 2 name: University of Rochester Medical Center

Site address:
https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/encyclopedia/content.asp
x?ContentTypeID=85&ContentID=P01468

Describe the purpose and content of the site (summarize):

A detailed description of the urinary structure and its function

especially the kidneys, ureters, and bladder has been explained
by the University of Rochester Medical Center. This way, the
program illustrates how urine is produced, and what the different
parts of the urinary system do, from filtering waste products in
the kidneys to storing and expelling the urine in the bladder.

Was the site useful to you? Why or why not?

The site was useful for viewing the structure and function of the
human body as it has a precise description of each part of the
urinary system and the functions it performs with illustrations to
ensure one is capable of easily grasping the idea. Also, it has
charts on normal urine color, which may reflect the current
health, and brief overviews of the major processes of kidneys
and the urinary system it is useful for those who need to begin to
study the topic.

List three interesting facts that you learned from the site.

1. Kidneys release a hormone called Erythropoietin

which encourages the formation of red blood cells within
the human body.
2. A healthy bladder means that you can contain up to 2
cups of urine for 2 to 5 hours.
3. Persistent pink or red coloration is an indication of
blood in the urine and may point at an underlying
condition.

Site # 3 name: Cleveland Clinic

Site address:
https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/body/21197-urinary-
system

Describe the purpose and content of the site (summarize):

The NHI site offers major information about the urinary system,
its structures, as well as the roles of the kidneys, ureters,
bladder, and urethra. Another part describes how the system
helps to rid the blood of waste products and excess fluid, make
urine, and expel it from the body. Here on the site, there are
clearly defined pictures of the male and female urinary systems
with such parts as the renal pelvis, renal tubules together with
the prostate gland in males that are involved in the process of
passing urine. To promote people’s health and make them aware
of possible problems the site also provides links to information
on urinary and bladder problems.

Was the site useful to you? Why or why not?

Yes, the site was helpful to me because it gave a simple

description of the urinary system starting with its structure for
the sake of anatomy, and its functions in regard to the health of
the body. The images and descriptions most helpful to me in
comprehending the role of the particular constituent as well as
the sequence through which the urine is made and eliminated
from the body provided me with the fundamental information I
needed for anyone learning human physiology.

List three interesting facts that you learned from the site.
1. Kidneys are organs that have the role of filtrating blood and
endeavor to expel unwanted substances in the blood in the form
of urine.
2. The renal pelvis in each kidney is the broad funnel-like
cavity through which urine passes in each kidney before it
passes through the ureters.
3. The bladder holds the urine until is time to expel it through
the urethra.
