Difference between Approach and Method

Approach a theoretical perspective such as Communicative Language teaching

Method A specific instructional application with objectives designed by teachers E.g ‘’Task Based
language teaching

Communicative language teaching

is based on the fact that language is based primarily on communication

Goal: To develop communicative competence

Teacher’s role:

. Facilitate communication

.Enable students to use the language to communicate

.To give students opportunity to negotiate meaning

.To allow students express and share their opinions

Content Based Instruction


A method in which non language content is taught to students, it can Maths, Geography, Music, and
Cooking

Language objective Vs Content Objective

Language objective focuses more about language aptitude E.g. Past participle

Ex: To teach the past participles students will be able to make sentences with past participles

Content Objective focuses more about the content of a subject E.g Addition and subtraction

EX: Students will be able to add or subtract number from 1 to 10

Task based language

A task is a communicative language learning activity that engages students interest, focus on
meaning; usually involves some sort of ‘’Gap’’ and also relates to real word activities

To design a task a teacher has to identify the learner’s needs by setting appropriate topics, then
Design task sequences and after monitors its effectiveness
