Acknowledgments
Special appreciation is noted for the original and pioneering work of Dr.
Robert Abernethy, whose early studies permitted the development of the
universal uncertainty model fundamental to the methods of this text. My
personal and most sincere gratitude remains that which goes to my Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ, who saw fit to grant me the talents and abilities
without which this writing would not have been possible at all. In Him
there is no uncertainty, only the certainty of life everlasting.

UNIT 1
1-2. Purpose
The purpose of this book is to convey to the student a comprehensive
knowledge of measurement uncertainty methods through documentation
that is logically categorized and readily utilized in practical situations that
confront an experimenter. Course structure is purposely divided into

4 UNIT 1: Introduction and Overview
The course is presented on the college level and presumes that the student
has received two years’ training in engineering or science, can handle
rudimentary principles of calculus, and has a calculator or computer to
work the examples and exercises.
There are many ways to conduct an uncertainty analysis. One way is illus-
trated in an Excel spreadsheet in Appendix N of this text. The Uncertainty
Analysis Template provided is designed as a starting point for engineers
and scientists to use to perform an uncertainty analysis. It contains the
major equations and summations used in estimating measurement uncer-
tainty, errors and uncertainties that affect results, ASME random and sys-
tematic categories, and ISO pedigree categories Type A (from statistical
analysis) and Type B (obtained other ways). A working version of the tem-
