Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan for Grade 1

This semi-detailed lesson plan for Grade 1 Mathematics focuses on teaching addition and subtraction along with their properties, specifically the commutative and zero properties. The lesson includes engaging activities, discussions, and group work to help students solve problems and understand the concepts. Students will also complete individual worksheets and an assignment to reinforce their learning.

Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan for Grade 1

Grade Level: Grade 1

Subject: Mathematics

Topic: Addition and Subtraction & Their Properties

Time Allotment: 50 minutes

Teaching Strategy: 4 A’s (Activity, Analysis, Abstraction, Application)

Materials: Counters (buttons, bottle caps, blocks), flashcards, number cards, manila paper,
worksheets, whiteboard and marker

I. Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to:

1. Solve basic addition and subtraction problems within 20.

2. Identify and apply the commutative and zero properties of addition.

3. Demonstrate their understanding through guided and independent activities.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Addition and Subtraction & Their Properties

References: K–12 Curriculum Guide, Grade 1 Mathematics

Materials: Counters, flashcards, activity sheets, number cards, whiteboard

III. Procedures

A. ACTIVITY (Motivation / Engagement)

Game: “Pick and Count!”

1. Each pupil draws a number card from a box.

2. They get the same number of counters (bottle caps or blocks).

3. Pupils form pairs and do the following:

Count how many items they have together (Addition)

Try removing the other’s items (Subtraction)

4. Example: Child A has 3 counters; Child B has 5.

"What is 3 + 5?" (8)

"What is 5 - 3?" (2)

Teacher says:

"Let’s find out what happens when we add and subtract numbers. Are the answers the same
when we change the order? Let’s explore!"

B. ANALYSIS (Discussion and Questioning)

For Addition:

“What did you get when you added your counters?”

“What if you switched the numbers—was the answer the same?”

(Yes, 3 + 5 = 5 + 3 = 8)

Teacher explains:

"This shows the commutative property—we can add numbers in any order and still get the
same sum."

For Zero Property:

“What happens when you add zero to a number?”

(Nothing changes!)
“What is 6 + 0?”

(Still 6!)

“What about 0 + 9?”

(Still 9!)

Teacher explains:

"That’s the zero property of addition—when you add 0, the number stays the same."

For Subtraction:

“What is 9 - 0?”

(Still 9!)

“Can we do 0 - 9?”

(No, not yet!)

Teacher wraps up Analysis:

"Addition has special rules, like switching numbers and using zero. Subtraction is different—we
have to be careful with the order."

C. ABSTRACTION

Teacher explains clearly with examples on the board:

1. Commutative Property of Addition

3+4=7

4+3=7

6+2=8

2+6=8

Key Idea: You can change the order of numbers in addition, and the sum is still the same.

2. Zero Property of Addition

7+0=7

0+5=5

10 + 0 = 10

Key Idea: Adding zero does not change the number.

3. Subtraction Reminder

8-0=8

8-3=5

But 3 - 8 = (not yet possible!)

Key Idea: Subtraction has no commutative property. Order matters!

D. APPLICATION

Group Activity

Pupils work in pairs to solve given problems using counters or number cards.

Sample Problems:

1. 2 + 5 = ___

2. 0 + 6 = ___

3. 9 - 0 = ___

4. 6 + 4 = 4 + ___

5. 10 - 4 = ___

Worksheet (Individual Task):

Circle the correct answer:

1. 7 + 0 = __ (7 / 0 / 1)

2. 5 + 2 = 2 + __ (2 / 3 / 5)

3. 9 - 0 = __ (0 / 9 / 1)

4. 8 + 1 = __

5. 4 + 3 = 3 + __

IV. Evaluation (Oral / Written)

Answer the following:

1. 4 + 5 = ___

2. 5 + 4 = ___ (What property is shown?)

3. 9 - 0 = ___

4. 0 + 7 = ___

5. 10 - 3 = ___

V. Assignment

"Draw or write two addition and two subtraction problems showing what you learned today.
Use colorful objects or drawings, and label your answers. Submit it tomorrow."
