Artificial

Intelligence in
M&E
History of Ai: Early Foundations and Conceptual
Beginnings (1950s-1970s)
➢1950: Alan Turing publishes "Computing Machinery and Intelligence,"
introducing the Turing Test to assess machine intelligence.
➢1956: Dartmouth Conference marks the official birth of AI as a field. Key
figures include John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and
Claude Shannon.
➢1950s-1960s: Development of early AI programs such as the Logic Theorist
and General Problem Solver by Newell and Simon.
➢1966-1974: Initial successes lead to increased funding and optimism, followed
by the first AI Winter due to unmet expectations and limited computational
power.
History of AI: A technology of the Future Stuck in the
Past
Expert Systems and Knowledge-Based Approaches (1980s-1990s)
➢1980s: Rise of Expert Systems, which use knowledge-based approaches to solve
specific problems. MYCIN and DENDRAL are notable examples.
➢1982: Japan's Fifth Generation Computer Systems Project aims to create
advanced computing and AI technologies, spurring global interest and
competition.
➢1986: Backpropagation algorithm popularized by Rumelhart, Hinton, and
Williams, revitalizes interest in neural networks.
➢Late 1980s-1990s: Gradual decline in Expert Systems due to high development
costs and inflexibility, leading to a shift towards machine learning and
probabilistic reasoning.
History of AI: Modern AI and Deep Learning Revolution
2000s-Present (GPT)
2000s: Advances in computational power, big data, and improved algorithms
rejuvenate AI research.
2006: Geoffrey Hinton and his team demonstrate the effectiveness of deep
learning, marking the beginning of the Deep Learning Revolution.
2012: AlexNet, a deep convolutional neural network, wins the ImageNet
competition, drastically reducing error rates in image recognition.
2016: AlphaGo by DeepMind defeats world champion Go player Lee Sedol,
showcasing AI's potential in complex, strategic tasks.
2020s: Widespread applications of AI across various industries, including
healthcare, finance, and autonomous vehicles. GPT-3 and other large language
models exhibit advanced natural language processing capabilities.
AI in Monitoring and Evaluation
At its core, AI employs algorithms and machine learning to replicate human
thinking in:
➢data analysis,
➢interpretation, and
➢prediction.
In M&E, AI enables to develop tools, swiftly processes large datasets, offering
real-time insights essential for timely decision-making and adaptive management
in development programs.
What is Prompt Engineering
Prompt engineering is the process of refining prompts for generative AI models
to produce desired outputs.
It involves structuring instructions comprehensible to AI.
In practice, it aims to optimize AI tool performance.
In summary, Prompt engineering is the practice of designing inputs for AI tools
that will produce optimal outputs
Uses of AI in M&E
• Advanced Data Analysis (Both Qualitative and Quantitative data)
• Predictive Analytics
• Real time monitoring (Integration with project systems)
• Improved data quality (data cleaning and organizing)
• Data Visualization
• Reporting of data and providing insights
Architecture of a Prompt
A prompt contains any of the following elements:
1. Instruction - a specific task or instruction you want the model to perform
2. Context - external information or additional context that can steer the
model to better responses
3. Input Data - the input or question that we are interested to find a response
for
4. Output Indicator - the type or format (e.g. tone, table e.t.c) of the output.

You do not need all the four elements for a prompt and the format depends on
the task at hand.

Assignment 1: AI for Analysis
From What you have learnt on the Prompts and Softwares, Develop a
questionnaire (open ended)share and fill it accordingly include an audio
recorded. Or recorded online video from you tube download it in audio format
and transcribe or use Note GPT

Use AI to analyze the open-ended data and analyse the broad themes from the
data collected?

Use AI to analyse your data and produce Graphs (Gemini)?

Assignment 2: AI for reporting
From the analysed data you have done using Pivot use AI to provide
insights in your data for reporting and link it to the internet to provide
relevant sources of information that are credible to your work?
Assignment 3: Secondary Data Review
Identify a report and use Chat-PDF to enable you review the report inline
with your organization thematic areas and interest to enable you make
critical decision?

In the same context use AI (Chat-GPT or Gemini Connected to the

internet) to find relevant text or publication in your organization line of
interest, download it and do a content analysis using Chat PDF
