REPORT
1.0)Rationale

The "Smart Dustbin using Ultrasonic Sensor" aims to promote cleanliness and hygiene by
automatically opening the bin lid when someone approaches and closing it afterward. It is especially
useful in public places to minimize the need to touch the bin, thus reducing the spread of germs and
diseases. This system uses an ultrasonic sensor to detect motion and a servo motor to control the lid's
movement.

This micro-project helps students develop real-world problem-solving skills while working in a team-
based environment.

Key Benefits:

 Delegation of roles and responsibilities

 Exposure to automation and sensor-based technologies
 Development of industry-relevant course outcomes
 Enhancement of soft skills such as time management, planning, and critical thinking

3.0 Course Outcomes Achieved

CO1 – Integrate hardware and software for simple IoT applications.
CO2 – Create IoT applications by interfacing various sensors and embedded boards.
CO3 – Create IoT applications by interfacing various actuators and embedded boards.

4.0 Topic Query: What is a Smart Dustbin?

A Smart Dustbin is an automated waste container that uses sensors (usually ultrasonic) to detect when a person
is nearby and opens its lid automatically. It helps reduce direct contact with the dustbin, thus promoting better
hygiene. Often powered by microcontrollers like Arduino, these dustbins are part of the broader initiative of
Smart Cities and IoT-based automation.

7.0 Outputs of the Micro-Project
1. Introduction

In today’s age of automation and smart technologies, creating smart and hygienic public infrastructure is a key
focus area. The Smart Dustbin aims to automate the waste disposal process to promote touch-free interaction
and enhance public hygiene, especially in places like hospitals, offices, schools, and urban areas.

2. Objectives

 To automate the dustbin lid using an ultrasonic sensor

 To provide a hands-free waste disposal solution
 To minimize the spread of germs and improve cleanliness
 To use microcontroller-based automation in real-life applications

3. System Architecture

a. Ultrasonic Sensor (HC-SR04):

 Measures distance by sending and receiving ultrasonic pulses

 Detects the presence of a person’s hand within a specific range (e.g., 20 cm)

b. Arduino Uno (Microcontroller):

 Receives input from the ultrasonic sensor

 Controls the servo motor based on the proximity data

c. Servo Motor (SG90):

 Opens and closes the dustbin lid

 Operated at specific angles (0° = closed, 90° = open)

d. Power Source:

 Can be powered via USB, batteries, or power banks

e. Enclosure:

 Any plastic dustbin with a lid modified to work with the servo

4. Working Principle

1. The ultrasonic sensor emits sound waves and waits for them to bounce back.
2. If an object (e.g., a hand) is detected within the predefined range:
o Arduino processes the signal
o Servo motor is triggered to open the lid
3. After a delay (e.g., 3–5 seconds), the lid closes automatically.
5. Software Components

 Arduino IDE: For writing and uploading code to the Arduino board
 Embedded C/C++: Used to interface the ultrasonic sensor and servo motor
 Serial Monitor (optional): To test distance values for calibration

6. Applications

 Smart homes and kitchens

 Hospitals for hygienic waste disposal
 Schools and universities
 Public spaces like parks, malls, and airports
 Offices to reduce cross-contamination

8. Challenges

 Servo motor torque limitations with heavy lids

 Dust and dirt may affect sensor performance
 Limited battery life in portable versions
 Lid must be properly aligned to avoid mechanical jamming

9. Future Scope

 Add a load sensor to detect bin fill level

 Integrate with IoT platforms for smart alerts when full
 Use solar power for eco-friendly operation
 Add mobile app notification and monitoring
 Improve lid design using 3D printed components

Conclusion: What is a Smart Dustbin?

A Smart Dustbin is an intelligent waste disposal solution designed to operate automatically using sensors and
microcontrollers. It detects the presence of a person and opens the lid without physical contact, thus enhancing
hygiene. Such automation solutions play a vital role in the vision of Smart Cities and public health
enhancement.
