1. Solve problems involving functions;

2. Represent real-life situations using functions,

including piecewise functions;

3. Appreciate the essence of solving functions

in real-life scenarios.
We can evaluate the value of a
function, f(x) based on a given value of the
value of the independent variable, say x,.
We just need to substitute the values f x in
the equation f(x).
Example 1:

Evaluate the given function 𝑓 𝑥 = 3𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 2

if 𝑥 = −5, −1, & 7.
Example 1: 𝒇 𝒙 = 𝟑𝒙 𝟐 + 𝟒𝒙 − 𝟐
If 𝑥 = −5
2
𝑓 𝑥 = 3𝑥 + 4𝑥 − 2
𝑓 −5 2
= 3(−5) + 4 −5 − 2
𝑓 −5 = 3 25 + 4 −5 − 2
𝑓 −5 = 75 − 20 − 2
𝒇 −𝟓 = 𝟓𝟑
Example 1: 𝒇 𝒙 = 𝟑𝒙 𝟐 + 𝟒𝒙 − 𝟐
If 𝑥 = −1
2
𝑓 𝑥 = 3𝑥 + 4𝑥 − 2
2
𝑓 −1 = 3(−1) + 4 −1 − 2
𝑓 −1 =3 1 −4−2
𝑓 −1 =3−6
𝒇 −𝟏 = −𝟑
Example 1: 𝒇 𝒙 = 𝟑𝒙 𝟐 + 𝟒𝒙 − 𝟐
If 𝑥 = 7
2
𝑓 𝑥 = 3𝑥 + 4𝑥 − 2
2
𝑓 7 = 3(7) + 4 7 − 2
𝑓 7 = 3 49 + 4(7) − 2
𝑓 7 = 147 + 28 − 2
𝒇 𝟕 = 𝟏𝟕𝟑
Example 2:

2
𝑥 −4
Evaluate the function 𝑓 𝑥 =
𝑥+2
if x = −6, 0, & − 10.
𝒙𝟐 − 𝟒
Example 2: 𝒇 𝒙 =
𝒙+𝟐
If 𝑥 = −6
𝑥
−42
36 − 4
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑓 −6 =
𝑥+2 −4
2
(−6) −4 𝒇 −𝟔 = −𝟖
𝑓 −6 =
(−6) + 2
𝒙𝟐 − 𝟒
Example 2: 𝒇 𝒙 =
𝒙+𝟐
If 𝑥 = 0
𝑥 2
−4 −4
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑓 0 =
𝑥+2 2
2
(0) −4 𝒇 𝟎 = −𝟐
𝑓 0 =
(0) + 2
𝒙𝟐 − 𝟒
Example 2: 𝒇 𝒙 =
𝒙+𝟐
If 𝑥 = −10
𝑥 2
−4 100 − 4
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑓 −10 =
𝑥+2 12
2
(−10) −4 𝒇 −𝟏𝟎 = 𝟖
𝑓 −10 =

This function is defined more than
one expression where each equations
applies to a certain interval over a
specified domain.
Example 1: Evaluate the function

𝟑𝒙 + 𝟐 𝒊𝒇 𝒙 ≥ 𝟎
𝒇 𝒙 =൝ 𝟐
−𝒙 + 𝟑 𝒊𝒇 𝒙 < 𝟎

𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑓 −3 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑓 0 .
Example 1: Evaluate the function
𝟑𝒙 + 𝟐 𝒊𝒇 𝒙 ≥ 𝟎
𝒇 𝒙 =൝ 𝟐
−𝒙 + 𝟑 𝒊𝒇 𝒙 < 𝟎
𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑓 −3 :
2
Since 𝑥 = −3, we use 𝑓 𝑥 = −𝑥 + 3
2
𝑓 0 = −(−3) +3
𝑓 0 = −9 + 3
𝒇 𝟎 = −𝟔
Example 1: Evaluate the function
𝟑𝒙 + 𝟐 𝒊𝒇 𝒙 ≥ 𝟎
𝒇 𝒙 =൝ 𝟐
−𝒙 + 𝟑 𝒊𝒇 𝒙 < 𝟎
𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑓(0) :
Since 𝑥 = 0, we use 𝑓 𝑥 = 3𝑥 + 2
𝑓 −3 = 3(0) + 2
𝑓 −3 = 0 + 2
𝒇 −𝟑 = 𝟐
Example 2: Evaluate the function

𝟒𝒙 + 𝟏 𝒊𝒇 − 𝟏𝟎 ≤ 𝒙 < −𝟐

𝒇 𝒙 = ൞𝒙 − 𝟏 𝒊𝒇 − 𝟐 ≤ 𝒙 ≤ 𝟐
𝒙+𝟏 𝒊𝒇 𝟐 < 𝒙 ≤ 𝟏𝟎
𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑓 −2
Since 𝑥 = −2, we use 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 2 − 1
2
𝑓 −2 = (−2) −1
𝑓 −2 = 4 − 1
𝒇 −𝟐 = 𝟑

𝟐
𝒇 𝒙 = ൞𝒙 − 𝟏 𝒊𝒇 − 𝟐 ≤ 𝒙 ≤ 𝟐
𝒙+𝟏 𝒊𝒇 𝟐 < 𝒙 ≤ 𝟏𝟎
𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑓 −5
Since 𝑥 = −5, we use 𝑓 𝑥 = 4𝑥 + 1
𝑓 −5 = 4(−5) + 1
𝑓 −5 = −20 + 1
𝒇 −𝟓 = −𝟏𝟗
Example 2: Evaluate the function
𝟒𝒙 + 𝟏 𝒊𝒇 − 𝟏𝟎 ≤ 𝒙 < −𝟐
𝟐
𝒇 𝒙 = ൞𝒙 − 𝟏 𝒊𝒇 − 𝟐 ≤ 𝒙 ≤ 𝟐
𝒙+𝟏 𝒊𝒇 𝟐 < 𝒙 ≤ 𝟏𝟎
𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑓 7
Since 𝑥 = 7, we use 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 + 1
𝑓 7 =7+1
𝒇 𝟕 =𝟖
Example 3: Real-life function
1.) A bus ride costs P9.00 for the 5 kilometers, and each additional
integer kilometer adds P1.00 to the fare. Use a piecewise function
to represent the bus fare in terms of the distance (d) in kilometers.

2.) A cellphone owner is charged P300.00 monthly for a

particular mobile plan, which includes 150 free text messages.
Messages in excess of 150 are charged P1.00 each. Represent the
monthly cost for text messaging using function t(m), where m is
the number of messages sent in a month.

PIECEWISE FUNCTION

1.) The minimun fare for a jeepney ride is 9 pesos for the first 4
kilometers. A fee of 1 peso will be added per succeeding kilometer.
