LESSON 7: END ACTIVITIES

1. A manager once told a subordinate, “To be a good leader, you must first
become a good follower.” Discuss what it means to be a good follower,
whether you agree with statement, and why or why not.

A good follower is the one who listens, learns, and supports his or her
leader while working for a shared goal. I agree to the statement that “to be a
good leader you must first become a good follower” because good leaders have
to learn from and understand the viewpoints of people they lead. Becoming a
good follower helps them learn the values of teamwork, respect, and
cooperation, which are vital attributes for leadership. For example, an effective
follower is able to communicate well, takes initiative, and responds positively to
feedback. Such qualities would be carried into a leadership role and inspire trust
and respect. Good followers will also develop empathy and understand the
challenges that leaders must face, making them more effective at guiding others.
It is much harder for leaders to relate to their team and create a supporting
environment without having had experience as a follower. A good follower is an
important aspect of becoming a competent and effective leader.
2. Think of situations in which you were a leader. What leadership style did
you use? Using hindsight and the material of this lesson, what would you
have done differently?

In our group activity for a product proposal in Managerial Economics, I was

leader and used a participative leadership style. I always thought that by
involving the decision-making process with the members, they would like it and
be motivated toward sharing their ideas. Though these good discussions and
teamwork feelings were there in this approach, the same was slower than what I
expected in terms of the decision-making process. In retrospect, I think
participation is indeed necessary, but there are moments when things would
have gotten done better with a stronger authoritative approach. If I had been
stricter in setting clear guidelines and timelines, the group could have made
decisions faster and maintained focus. However, I believe that in this case and
next time, I have to strike a balance regarding authority and participation. For
instance, if I balanced both styles, I should have controlled things better despite
valuing the input from everyone.
