Reporting verbs are used to summaries what someone said. We use a variety
of verbs that have more than one patterns.

1-Reporting verb + (that) + clause (s+v)

Agree ‫يوافق‬
Regret ‫يندم‬
Admit ‫يعترف‬
Promise ‫يوعد‬
Deny ‫ينكر‬
Suggest ‫يقترح‬
Explain ‫يشرح‬

-He explained that tickets were expensive.


-She admitted that she was wrong.

2-Reporting verb + object + that + clause

Advise ‫ينصح‬
Remind ‫يّذكر‬
Warn ‫يحّذر‬

-He warned him (that) he was in danger.

3-Reporting verb + (not) to – infinitive

-He offered to pay them 10$ an hour.


-The publishers promised to look at her book.

4-Reporting verb + object + (not) to – infinitive

Encourage ‫يشجع‬

-They encouraged him to try again.

5-Reporting verb + (not) gerund

Advise ‫ينصح‬
Regret ‫يندم‬
Admit ‫يعترف‬
Suggest ‫يقترح‬
Deny ‫ينكر‬
Recommend ‫يوصي‬

-She suggested getting a job as a secretary.

6-Reborting verb + preposition + (not) + gerund

Object to ‫يعترض على‬


Apologies for ‫يعتذر عن‬

-They apologized for not listening to her.

7-Reporting verb + preposition + object + gerund

Insist to ‫يصر على‬

-She insisted on him attending the meeting.

8-Reporting verb + object + preposition + (not) gerund

Accuse somebody of ‫يتهم شخص ب‬


Congratulate somebody on ‫يهنئ شخصا ب‬
Warn somebody against/ about ‫يحذر شخصا من او عن‬
Criticise somebody / something for ‫ينتقد شخص او شيئا على‬
Praise somebody for ‫يمتدح شخصا من أجل‬

-He criticized her answer for being too short

We use that + should clause with verbs (demand,recommend,suggest) to
provide information about the object and we use it with verbs that express
the idea that an action is necessary.

-His boss suggested that he should take a holiday.


-They recommended that she should drive.

Examples:
1-Reem: “I’m really sorry I forget your birthday, Suha”
(apologised) (sorry) ‫وظيفة الجمله هنا االعتذار‬
-Reem apologized for forgetting Suha’s birthday.

2-Nada: “I will cook for you on Saturday”


(promise) ‫نفهم من الجمله ان ندى توعد المخاطب‬
(that) + subject +verb = -Nada promised that she would cook for me on Saturday.
(not) + to infinitive = - Nada promised to cook on Saturday.

3-“I was wrong”


(admit)‫نالحظ ان وظيفة الجمله هي االعتراف‬
(that) + subject + verb = Muna admitted that she had been wrong.
(not) gerund = Muna admitted being wrong.

Choose the correct answer from those given.

-The sentence that has the same meaning in reported speech as the one above
