Practical Retooling

The document outlines the competency-based curriculum retooling for Physics practicals held on March 14, 2024, detailing the necessary components for report writing including aims, hypotheses, variables, and data presentation. It emphasizes the importance of pre-tests and provides guidelines for scoring based on various criteria such as accuracy in data recording and analysis. Additionally, it highlights the need for a structured approach to conducting experiments and interpreting results in alignment with scientific principles.

Scores were changed to weights.
a) Aim
b) Hypothesis
c) Variables
d) Possible Errors and precautions
e) Procedure (list of apparatus, diagram, procedure)
f) Presentation of data. No rigidity e.g. data can be presented in rows
and also columns
g) Recording of data with accuracy
h) Data analysis and interpretation
i) Conclusion and analysis
The order of the above does not matter. The learner chooses an
appropriate way to write a report.
Weights start from 0 – 6
It is important to give the learners pre-tests before administering learners
with the end of cycle assessments.
The pre-tests are used to give a picture of how to make a marking guide.
The pre-test should resemble that of the end of year cycle.
From UNEB 2025 PP2,
a) Aim Most of the aims were partial. The title should have the
scientific investigation and application according to the scenario.
b) A hypothesis. Reflect the hypothesis with the application of the
practical e.g (refractive index of the glass block should be between
1.4 and 1.6 so that it can be used during physics practical lessons)
is a scientific prediction yet to be tested. I.e, it is scientific that
refractive index, n can be between 1.0 – 2 but it cannot be 20.
c) Variables. The number of scores here is 06. The learner earns 03
scores as long as the write down; independent variables, dependent
variables and control variable.
Independent variable - angle of incidence, i
Dependent variable – angle of refraction, r
Controlled variable. Temperature for electricity. Intensity of light
falling on the glass block. Wind. One time measurement e.g.
measurement of initial position of the pointer, P0
d) Sources of errors and precautions. This can easily be formulated
from the controlled variables.
e) Procedure. List apparatus (at least 03). Labelled diagram. List of
procedure to follow. There are times the order may not affect the
award of scores.
f) Presentation of data. title of the table is required. The data should
be summarized in a table. The units should be there. scores are
awarded as long as records are in the table.
g) Recording of data with accuracy. Checking of the data in the
table if it lies in the expected values. Correct calculations. At least
5 values of the independent variable. the right trend should be
awarded; increasing or decreasing.
h) Data analysis and interpretation.
Title with or without units. Drawing (01 score) and labelling axis
(01 at least one well labelled axis). Scale, the scale must be
uniform (01- at least one scale). Starting point should not be
limited while marking. data should be analyzed using Graphical
Method Only. emphasize plotting using a dot and a circle around
it accurately. the line of best feet should pass through majority of
the points plotted. the slope should cover at least half of the graph
plotted. A score for reading the points to use to calculate slope.
i) Conclusion and advice. Conclude in line with the hypothesis
(scientific and application).
