ART GALLERIES OF LONDON
Speaking about art galleries of London we should first of all mention The National
Gallery, The National Portrait Gallery and The Tate gallery.
The National Gallery consists of one of the richest collections of paintings in the world.
The range of the collection is wide. It represents all the leading schools of European painting
from the 13th to early 20th centuries, for example pictures of Rembrandt, Turner, Monet,
Picasso, Van Gogh and other great masters.
Another gallery is the National Portrait Gallery where there are oil paintings, water
colors, drawings and sculptures. The Gallery constantly changes displays and holds the annual
portrait competition for young artists.
The Tate Gallery is one of London's best-known art galleries, opened with the financial
support of Sir Henry Tate, who also gave a collection of 65 paintings. The Gallery contains a
unique collection of British paintings from the 16th century to the present day. It regularly holds
special exhibitions.
The most famous museums in Britain are the Victoria and Albert Museum and the
British Museum. The Victoria and Albert museum is one of the world's outstanding art
museums. It is situated in south central London. The museum was given its present name in
honor of Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert. The British Museum has a priceless
collection of antiquities from almost every period and every part of the world. It houses
collections of drawings, coins, medals and ethnography.

Student 1. My name is Pavlo. I’ll be your guide for today and I want to tell you about William
Hoggart. He is one of the greatest of English artist of 18th century. William Hoggart made his
name as an artist painting “conversation pieces”. These little pictures were very popular in
England during the 18th century. They represented members of the same family or close friends
having tea, playing cards or simply talking to one another. Hoggart said that his picture was his
stage, and men and women his players.
The masterpiece of the series was the famous “Marriage a la Mode”. This set of pictures
describes a marriage between the daughter of a rich man and a young lord.
The works of this painter are exhibited in the National Gallery and the Tate Gallery in London.
Student 2: My name is Rodion. I am your guide. I’ll tell you about John Constable, one of the
greatest landscape painters. He was born in Sufford, on June 11, 1776. He was the son of a
wealthy miller. He began to take interest in landscape painting while he was at grammar school.
His father did not favour art as a profession. As a boy Constable worked almost secretly,
painting in the cottage of an amateur painter. His keen artistic interest was such that his father
allowed him to go to London in 1795, where he began to study painting.
Constable was the first landscape painter who considered that every painter should make his
sketches direct from nature, that is, working in the open air. He tried to earn his living by
portraits.
The most notable works of Constable are “Dedham Vale”, “Flatford Mill“, “A Cottage in a
Cornfield”, “The Hay Wain”, “Malvern Hall”, “Weymouth bay”, “Boat Building” and others.
The works of this painter are exhibited in the National Gallery in London.
Student 3: My name is Victoria. I want to tell you about Thomas Gainsborough. He was a
portraitist and landscape painter. He was born in Sudbury in 1727 and was the son of merchant.
His father sent him to London to study arts. Thomas Gainsborough spent 8 years working and
studying in London. There he got acquainted with the Flemish traditional school of painting. In
his portraits green and blue colours predominate.
He was the first British painter who painted British native countryside. His best works are
“Portrait of Sarah Buxton”, “Lady Georgiana Cavendish”, “Lady in blue”, “Portrait of Sarah
Siddons”, “Cornard Wood”, “Sunset”, “The cottage door”, “The market cart” and “The bridge”.
The works of this painter are exhibited in the National Gallery in London and in the Hermitage
in St. Petersburg.

At the Gallery
- Have you been at the National Gallery of Art?
- No, I haven't. For some years it was closed for capital repairs. It goes without saying, I would
like to visit this gallery and I hope to do it in the future.
- What museums have you visited?
- Some years ago I had a chance of visiting the National Gallery of Art. I was greatly impressed
by its galleries, especially by the Greek Hall, Egyptian Mummies, and of course by all
masterpieces of painting and sculpture.
- What picture galleries or arts museums in other countries do you know?
- Well, first of all, it is the national Gallery in London. The Building itself was built in 1838. It
housed the collection of Old Masters Paintings (38 paintings). This Collection was given to the
nation by an English private collector, Sir George Beamount.
- And what collection does it house at the present time?
- Today the National Gallery exhibits works of all the European schools of painting of the 13th -
19th centuries. There you can see the most famous works, such as pictures by Velasquez,
Rembrandt, Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough and others.
