QUESTION ONE
(a) Perform the following arithmetic operations;
(i) (−48) + (−80) in 2′𝑠 complement arithmetic. Take a word length of 8 bits. [3]
(ii) 98 − 43 in 10′s complement. [2]
(iii) 984 + 599 in 8421 BCD notation. [3]
(iv) 11001102 ÷ 10012 [2]
(v) 110012 × 101012 [2]
(b) Convert;
(i) 148.45 to binary using the sum-of weights method. [3]
(ii) (100110111)2 to Gray code. [2]

QUESTION TWO

(a) Determine the base of 𝑏 in each of the following numbers;


(i) (361)10 = (551)𝑏 (ii) (859)10 = (5𝐵7)𝑏 [4]
(b) Form the radix and diminished radix complement for each of the following numbers;

(i) (4723)8 (ii) (𝐴𝐵𝐶1)16 [6]


QUESTION THREE

The owner’s manual for a certain personal computer states that the computer has
usable memory locations at the following hex addresses; 𝟎𝟐𝟎𝟎 through 𝟎𝟑𝑭𝑭 and
𝟒𝟎𝟎𝟎 through 7𝑭𝑫𝟎. Determine the total number of available memory locations.

(a) Determine the range of;


(i) unsigned decimal values that can be represented in 10 bits. [2]
(ii) signed decimal values using the same number of bits. [2]
(b) Consider the following arbitrary number system; 𝟎, 𝟏, 𝟐, 𝑳 and 𝑴 as its independent
digits. Determine the:
(i) decimal equivalent of (𝟏𝟐𝑳𝑴. 𝑳𝟏). [3]
(ii) total number of possible 3-digit combinations in this arbitrary number system.
