Statement of Purpose (Saheb Mohapatra)
Right from the beginning of B.Math at ISI Bangalore, I was greatly drawn to Algebra. I
would often read several expository articles and discuss them with my peers. During the
summer of my 1st year at ISI, I was in a group reading project in Commutative Algebra
organized by the Math Club. I delivered a talk on Euclidean Domains with Unique
Quotient and Remainder, based on an AMM article. Since then, I was interested to find
characterisation of Euclidean Domains. I read several research articles in this pursuit,
including the ones on Motzkin’s construction.
During the summer of 2nd year of B.Math, I was selected for the VSRP-2022 programme
organized by TIFR-Mumbai. Under the guidance of Dr. Vijaylaxmi Trivedi, I did a project
on Homological Methods in Commutative Algebra. I primarily studied the functors “Ext”
and “Tor”. At the end of the programme, I delivered a presentation on “Some
characterisations of Flatness using Tor functor”. I also guided a group reading project on
Commutative algebra where we covered “Lasker-Noether Theorem” and “Hilbert
Nullstellensatz”, as a Math Club activity at ISI.
Parallel to all these, I was very much attracted to topology. During a course on Differential
Topology in my 3rd year, I thoroughly covered the first 2 chapters of the book by Guillemin
and Pollack. I particularly enjoyed working out the proofs of Jordan Curve Theorem and
Classification of 1-manifolds. In my Algebraic Geometry course, I thoroughly covered the
first 6 chapters of the book Algebraic Curves by Fulton.
During my final year of B.Math, I took Algebraic Number Theory as an elective. I covered
the basics of Valuations, Ramification Theory and solved exercises from the first 6 chapters
of the book Number Fields, by Marcus.
Recently, in the last summer, I worked alongside a research scholar (Rakesh Kumar) at ISI
Kolkata on the problem of Mutually Unbiased Bases in Non-Prime Power Dimensions.
We studied various proofs of the problem in prime-power dimensions and also explored some
recent graph-theoretic approaches to the general open problem. This semester, I am giving
lectures on Complex Analysis as a part of the Math Club activities at ISI. I am also learning
Algebraic Topology by giving lectures to my classmates.
What I bring to the table is a strong grasp of all the various branches of Mathematics taught
at undergraduate and graduate levels. I have internalised proofs of major results and
problem-solving strategies of various branches. This equips me with a variety of tools for
approaching a problem. I am interested in the project on Arithmetic Algebraic Geometry
to be supervised by Dr. Jim Borger. In addition, I am also interested in the projects on
Algebraic Topology (to be supervised by Vigleik Angeltveit) and Algebraic Geometry
(to be supervised by Anand Deopurkar).
