Class Vi Chapter - Major Relief Features of The World

The document provides notes for Class VI Social Science on major relief features of the world, including definitions and distinctions between fold mountains, block mountains, volcanic mountains, plateaus, and plains. It explains the formation processes of these landforms and highlights their characteristics, such as fertility and population density in plains. Additionally, it includes fill-in-the-blank and multiple-choice questions to assess understanding of the material.

NOTES
CLASS VI
SUBJECT: SOCIAL SCIENCE CHAPTER 19: MAJOR RELIEF FEATURES
OF THE WORLD

I ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS IN SHORT

1. What is a fold mountain?

Ans: A fold mountain is a higher region of the earth’s
surface formed due to the compression of horizontal layers
of rocks. Ex: the Himalayas and the Aravallis.

2. Distinguish between block mountains and volcanic mountains.

• Ans: Block Mountains are formed due to tension that creates faults.
• Volcanic mountains are generally formed by the deposition of molten
material called lava that comes out from beneath of the crust.

3. What is a plateau?
Ans: Plateaus are elevated regions, lower than mountains,
which have a flat top and steep sides.
Therefore, the plateaus are also called tablelands.

4. What is a plain?
Ans: Plains are low-lying region, formed by the deposition of fertile
materials called alluvium.

5. What makes the plains fertile and habitable?

Ans: Plains are fertile because of the alluvial soil and plenty
of water for agriculture. This is the reason why
a large number of people inhabit the plains.

II ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS

1. Describe any two types of mountains.

a. Ans: Fold Mountains are formed because of the compression
of horizontal layers of rocks. A simple fold mountain
has down folds or valleys called syncline and up folds
or ridges called anticlines. Fold Mountains that were
formed 60-70 million years ago are called young
fold mountains. Ex: The Himalayas
Fold mountains that were formed 200-300 million years ago are
called old fold mountains. Ex: The Aravallis.
b. Volcanic mountains are formed by deposition of molten
material called lava from beneath of the crust.
This happens due to internal earth movements which
pushes the molten material to the surface through openings
or vents in the crust. The molten material gradually piles
up and cools layer after layer over the years to form
a conical mountain. Ex: Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa.

2. Explain the formation of a volcanic mountain with a suitable diagram.

• Ans: Volcanic mountains are formed by deposition of molten
material called lava from beneath of the crust.
• This happens due to internal earth movements which
pushes the molten material to the surface through openings
or vents in the crust.
• The molten material gradually piles up and cools layer after layer
• over the years to form a conical mountain.
Ex: Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa.

3. Describe a rift valley.

• Ans: A rift valley is formed due to tension that creates faults in the crust.
• When the area between the cracks sinks down, forming a rift valley.
• A rift valley is also called a graben.
• The largest rift valley in the world is the Great Rift Valley in East Africa,
which is about 6000 km in length.
• The Narmada Valley in India is an example of a rift valley.

2
4. How are plains formed?
• Ans: A plain is a low-lying, flat land surface not more than 200 m above sea level.
• Plains are generally formed by the deposition of alluvium consisting of silt, sand and
clay are washed down from mountains and plateaus by rivers.
• So, the plains are very fertile and have high population densities as agriculture is
possible.
Ex: The Indo-Gangetic Plain of India

5. How do mountains differ from plateaus?

• Ans: Plateaus are elevated regions, lower than mountains which have a flat top and
steep sides. Therefore, plateaus are also called tablelands.
• Plateaus are generally well populated as cultivation is possible. Plateaus also have
rich reserve of minerals.
• A mountain has high pointed peaks and valleys.
• Mountains are sparsely populated as they are not suitable for farming, and the
climate is also hard.

III FILL IN THE BLANKS:

a. The highest mountain peak in the world is the Mt. Everest.
b. Alluvial plains are made up of silt, sand and clay.
c. Earthquakes and volcanoes are a result of internal processes.
d. The Deccan Plateau is rich in black soil.
e. Rift Valleys are also called graben.

IV CHOOSE THE CORRECT ANSWER:

1. A tableland is also called a
(a) plain (b) plateau
(c) mountain (d) volcano.
Ans: (b)

2. Block mountains are formed because of

(a) folding (b) faulting/vertical upliftment
(c) lava deposit (d ) erosion.
Ans: (b)

3
3. The Andes Mountains are in
(a) Africa (b) South America
(c) Australia (d) Europe
Ans: (b)
4. An anticline is a/an
(a) upfold (b) fault
(c) graben (d) vent.
Ans: (a)
5. A block mountain is also called
(a) horst (b) graben
(c) fault (d) tableland
Ans(a)
