LEC 2 PPT

The document discusses receptor modeling, which is based on the source-receptor framework to analyze air pollution from various sources such as burning coal, power plants, and traffic. It highlights the significance of PM2.5 and PM10 particulate matter, their health effects, and the transport processes of pollutants through diffusion and convection. Additionally, it covers source apportionment to identify pollution sources and their contributions to ambient air pollution levels.

Receptor Modelling

• It is based on source receptor framework.

• Source : Any source of Air pollution
• Different sources of air pollution :
▪ Burning coal, charcoal ( emits Co, Nox , Sox )
▪ Powerplants
▪ Traffic
▪ Incineration plants ( Waste Burning )
▪ Industries ( Lot of metallic emissions in air )

PM2.5 and PM10
• Most of the air pollutants meets the air quality
standards PM2.5, which is measure problem.
• PM2.5 : Particulate matter with aerodynamic dia less
than 2.5 µm.
• PM10 : Particulate matter with aerodynamic dia less
than 10 µm.
• PM2.5 has larger lifetime because it is small enough to
be suspended in air for a long time.
• They have adverse health effects due to getting
transported deeper into respiratory system.

Transport Processes
• Emissions or pollutants (Nox , Sox, PM2.5 ) transported from
source to receptor via :
▪ Diffusion
▪ Convection ( Advection )
• Diffusion is driven by concentration gradients.
• Diffusion happens because at source concentration is high so
it will get transported in all other direction where
concentration is low.
• Pollution is measured in terms of concentrations like PM2.5
( µg m-3 ) .
• If wind is stationary then diffusion is primary mode of
transport.

Convection ( Advection )
• Convection is the movement of particles
through a substance, transporting their heat
energy from hotter areas to cooler areas.
• It is driven by flow of fluids.
• Mode of heat transfer over long distances in
atmosphere is called advection.
• If wind is blowing then advection is the
primary mode of transport.

Source apportionment
• It refers to getting information about pollution
sources and the amount they contribute to
ambient air pollution levels.
• In this we measures chemical constituents of
PM2.5 ( Cu, Al, Si, Fe, organic compounds,
Elemental carbon, SO42-, NH4+, Ca++, NO3-, Cl- ).
• From sample collected at receptor
