Week 8 - LAQ
What are Computer Network and Their Types? Draft the diagram of Wireless Networking &
Sensor Networks.
Answer:
Computer Network:
A computer network is a set of interconnected computers that communicate with each other and
share resources and data. These networks can be categorized based on their size, geographical
coverage, and functionality. Here are some common types of computer networks:
1. Local Area Network (LAN): LANs cover a small geographical area, such as a single building or a
campus. They are often used for connecting computers within a home, office, or school.
Ethernet and Wi-Fi are common technologies used in LANs.
2. Wide Area Network (WAN): WANs span a larger geographical area, often connecting LANs
across cities, countries, or continents. The internet itself is a global WAN. WAN technologies
include leased lines, satellites, and internet service providers.
3. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): MANs cover a city or a metropolitan area. They are
designed to connect multiple LANs within a city, providing high-speed data transfer over a
limited geographic region.
4. Campus Area Network (CAN): CANs are networks that cover a university campus or a corporate
campus. They are typically larger than LANs but smaller than MANs, connecting multiple
buildings within a confined area.
5. Personal Area Network (PAN): PANs are very small networks designed for personal devices.
Bluetooth and Zigbee are examples of PAN technologies, often used for connecting
smartphones, laptops, and smart home devices.
6. Client-Server Network: In this network model, computers are divided into clients and servers.
Clients request services or resources from servers. Common in enterprise environments for file
sharing, email, and web services.
7. Peer-to-Peer Network: In a peer-to-peer network, all computers are considered equal, and
each can act as both a client and a server. Peer-to-peer networks are common for file sharing
and collaborative applications.
8. Wireless Network: These networks use wireless technologies like Wi-Fi to connect devices
without physical cables. They can be LANs, PANs, or even WANs when using cellular networks.
9. Internet of Things (IoT) Network: IoT networks connect a vast number of devices and sensors
to collect and exchange data. These networks are used in smart homes, smart cities, industrial
automation, and more.
Types of Wireless Networking & Sensor Networks:
Here is a diagram depicting the basic components of a Wireless Networking and Sensor Network:

Components:
1. Sensors (IoT Devices): These are small devices equipped with sensors and transceivers that can
collect data (temperature, humidity, motion, etc.) and transmit it wirelessly.
2. Wireless Access Point: This device serves as the bridge between the IoT sensors and the
network. It communicates with the sensors and provides connectivity to the data center or
application server.
3. Data Center: This is where the collected data is processed, stored, and analyzed. It typically
includes servers, databases, and analytics software.
4. Application Server: This server hosts applications that interact with the IoT devices. It can
provide real-time monitoring, control, and data visualization.
Wireless networking and sensor networks are crucial components of IoT ecosystems, enabling the
collection of data from various sensors and devices and facilitating communication between these
devices and centralized data processing systems. These networks are used in various applications,
including smart cities, industrial automation, environmental monitoring, and more.
