Structural Analysis Lectures

BASIC DEFINITIONS

• Structural Engineering:
The field of engineering concerned with the design of economical
and efficient load-bearing structures. Structural Analysis Lectures
BASIC DEFINITIONS
• Structural Analysis
The process of determining the internal forces acting in the
structural elements and reactions at supports due to external
loads.

Structural Analysis Lectures

BASIC DEFINITIONS
• Structural Design
The process of determining location, material, and size of
structural elements to resist forces acting on the structure using
specific Marginal of Safety.

Structural Analysis Lectures

BASIC DEFINITIONS
• Structural Elements
– Cables: Resist tension force only
– Bars: Resist normal force only (Tension or Compression)
– Beams: Resist mainly bending moment
– Columns: Resist mainly compression force
– Slab: Resist mainly bending Moment
– Foundations: Transmit loads to the bearing ground

Structural Analysis Lectures
BASIC DEFINITIONS
• Structural Materials:
Several Materials are used as structural materials, such as:
– Aggregate and Rock
– Wood
– Concrete
– Steel
– Aluminum
– Fibers
– Composite Materials

Structural Analysis Lectures

BASIC DEFINITIONS
Choose of a specific material depends on several factors such as:
– Load characteristics - Cost
– Importance of Structure - Material availability
– Local Experience - Arch. Requirements
– Environmental or nature of this place - Forming ways

Structural Analysis Lectures

BASIC DEFINITIONS
• Loads acting on Structures:
Loads can be classified based on:
– Concentrated vs Distributed Load
– Permanent vs Transient Load
– Static vs Dynamic Load
– Vertical, Lateral, and Longitudinal Load

Structural Analysis Lectures

LOADING TYPES:

GRAVITY LOADS;

1- DEAD LOADS ; OWN WEIGHTS ,SLABS & BEAMS, COLUMNS,FLOOR COVER.

2- LIVE LOADS; OCCUBANCY SUCH AS STUDENT, FURNATURE, REMOVABLE MACHINES.

LATERAL LOADS:

1-WIND LOADS ; WIND VELOCITY , BUILDING HEIGHT, SHAPE

2-SEISMIC LOADS ; SOIL TYPE, BUILDING LOCATION, STRUCTURAL SYSTEM

3-WATER / LIQUID PRESSURE

4-SOIL PRESSURE

Structural Analysis Lectures

BASIC DEFINITIONS
• Load Paths in the Structure:
Is the path by which loads are transmitted to the foundations
– Different structures have different load paths
– Some structures have only one path and others have several
load paths (redundancy)

e.g. Load path for

beam/slab structures

Structural Analysis Lectures

BASIC DEFINITIONS
• Failure Mechanism:
Structural failure refers to loss in the load-carrying capacity of
a component or member within a structure.
Failure is initiated when the material is stressed to the strength
limit, thus causing fracture or excessive deformations.
Ultimate failure is usually associated with extreme events. The
structural engineer needs to prevent loss of life by prohibiting
total collapse of the structural system.
Failure can happen due to:
– Loss of Strength - Static Instability
– Dynamic Instability
