Project Synopsis: Solarised Electric Bicycle

Introduction:
The increasing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions has led to the
development of electric bicycles. This project aims to retrofit a traditional bicycle with a 250-
watt Permanent Magnet DC (PMDC) motor, controlled by a throttle integrated with a brake
system. Additionally, a solar panel will be mounted to charge the battery, enhancing the overall
sustainability of the electric bicycle.

Problem Statement:
Conventional bicycles are limited by human power, restricting their utility for longer distances
and challenging terrains. The project addresses this limitation by integrating an electric motor to
enhance the bicycle's range and usability. Furthermore, the solar charging system aims to reduce
dependency on external power sources.

Description:
The electric bicycle will be equipped with a 250-watt PMDC motor, providing supplementary
power to assist the rider. The motor will be mounted on the bicycle frame, and the throttle will
control the motor's speed. The brake system will be integrated with the throttle to ensure safety
and efficient energy regeneration during braking. A solar panel will be affixed to the bicycle to
harness solar energy and charge the onboard battery, increasing the overall efficiency and range
of the electric bicycle.

Methodology Adopted:
- **Motor Integration:** Mounting the 250-watt PMDC motor on the bicycle frame.
- **Throttle and Brake System Integration:** Designing a system that combines the throttle for
motor control with the braking mechanism for safety and energy regeneration.
- **Solar Panel Installation:** Affixing a solar panel to the bicycle to capture sunlight for
charging the battery.
- **Battery Management:** Implementing a battery system that efficiently stores and utilizes
the harvested solar energy.
Equipments Required with Specifications:
- 250-watt PMDC motor
- Throttle and brake control system
- Solar panel (specifications to be determined based on energy requirements)
- Battery pack with charge controller
- Bicycle frame modification kit
- Wiring and connectors
- Tools for assembly and modification

Making Procedure:
- Assemble the motor onto the bicycle frame securely.
- Integrate the throttle and brake control system for seamless operation.
- Mount the solar panel on a suitable frame attachment for optimal sunlight exposure.
- Connect the solar panel to a charge controller and the battery pack.
- Test the integrated system for functionality and efficiency.

Environmental Aspects:
- The project promotes sustainable transportation by converting a traditional bicycle into an
electrically assisted, eco-friendly mode of transportation.
- Solar charging reduces reliance on conventional energy sources, minimizing the carbon
footprint associated with electric bicycles.

Advantages:
- Increased range and usability compared to traditional bicycles.
- Eco-friendly transportation with reduced carbon emissions.
- Sustainable energy usage through solar charging.
- Cost-effective alternative to commercially available electric bicycles.
Conclusion:
The integration of a 250-watt PMDC motor, throttle and brake control system, and a solar
charging panel transforms a conventional bicycle into an efficient and sustainable mode of
transportation. This project not only addresses the limitations of traditional bicycles but also
contributes to the promotion of eco-friendly commuting solutions, aligning with the growing
emphasis on sustainable technologies in the transportation sector.
