Content : Random Variables and Probability Distribution ( Mass Function of a Discrete Random Variable)
Learning Competencies:
• Construct the probability mass function of a discrete random variable and its corresponding histogram.
M11/12SP-IIIa-5.
Proper Discussion
Probability Distribution for a discrete random variable.
• The probability distribution of a discrete random variable X is a list of the possible values of X and the
corresponding probabilities of the values. It specifies the probability associated with each possible value
of the random variable. The distribution functions of the discrete random variables are concentrated as a
mass for a particular value, and generally known as Probability Mass Function.
• The discrete probability distribution can be graphed to form Probability histogram.
• Histogram is a bar graph.
Steps in constructing probability
1. List the sample space.
2. Count the number of boys in each outcome in the sample space and assign this number to this outcome,
and get the total number random variable or the frequency.
3. If each of the outcome is equally likely occur, then the probability is:
𝒏𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒕
𝑷(𝑬)
𝒏𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒔𝒑𝒂𝒄𝒆
• The probability of each value of the random variable must be between or equal to 0 and 1. In symbol 0 ≤
𝑃(𝑋) ≤ 1.
• The sum of all the probabilities of all values of the random variable must be equal to 1. In symbol, we
write it as 𝛴𝑃(𝑋) = 1.
Note: 1 signifies that it surely happens, the higher the probability, the higher it gets, the higher the chances that it
will appear, one denotes it will happen 0 denotes it will not happen that’s why the values must be between zero
to one.
Example:
1.
X 5 6 4 2 8 5 1 3 6 0
P(X) 5 6 4 2 8 5 1 3 6 0

1. If you are dealing with fractions, you can convert fractions to decimals for easy plotting.
2. In making the axes, make sure that you have equal intervals/spacing with the numbers.
Example:
Four coins are tossed. Let T be the random variable representing the number of tails that occur. Construct The
mass function of the random variable and construct a histogram.
Steps Solution
1. List the sample S={HHHH, HHHT, HHTH, HHTT, HTHH, HTHT, HTTH, HTTT,
space. THHH, THHT, THTH, THTT, TTHH, TTHT, TTTH, TTTT}
2. Count the number Outcome Value of Tails
of each outcome (Value of T)
and assign this HHHH 0
number to this HHHT 1
outcome, and get HHTH 1

random variable or
HTHH 1

HTTH 2
HTTT 3
THHH 1
THHT 2
THTH 2
THTT 3

The values of the random variable T(number of tails in this
experiment are 0, 1,2,3, and 4.
3. Construct the Number of Number of
frequency Tails Occurrence

Total 16
4. Construct the Number of Number of Probability
probability Tails Occurrence P(T)
distribution of the (Value of T) (Frequency)

Activity 1
Male
Supposed that two coins are tossed we are interested to determine the number of tails that will come out.
Let use T to represent the number of tails that will come out. Illustrate the probability distribution of a random
variable T.
Female
Two balls are drawn in succession without replacement from an urn containing 5 orange balls and 6 violet balls.
Let V be the random variable representing the number of violet balls. Illustrate the probability distribution of a
random variable V.
Activity 2
Determine whether the distribution represents a probability distribution. Write YES if it is probability
distribution. Otherwise, Write NO. Justify your answer.
