GENERAL OBJECTIVES
At the end of the class the students will able to understand Glomerulonephritis.
S. Specific Time Content Teach
No. Objectives metho

1 To introduce the 1min Dialysis is used to remove fluid and uremic waste products from the body when the lectur
topic kidneys cannot do so. Treat patients with edema that does not respond to treatment,
hepatic coma, K+, Ca2+,HTN & uremia. Methods of therapy include Hemodialysis,
Continuous Renal Replacement therapy (CRRT), and various forms of Peritoneal
Dialysis.

2 To define 1/2in It is a medical procedure that uses a special machine (a dialysis machine) to filter waste lectur
hemodialysis products from the blood and to restore normal constituents to it.

3 To describe 1min 1. Diffusion lectur

Principles of 2. Osmosis
Hemodialysis 3. Ultrafilteration

4 To discuss the 2min 1. Renal failure lectur

Indications of 2. Acute poisoning
HD 3. Pericarditis
4. Azotemia
5. Uremic Encephalopathy
6. Metabolic acidosis
7. Pulmonary edema
8. Hyperkalemia
9. Pre &Post renal transplant
10. Post partum renal insufficiency
11. Fluid overload not responding to medication

5 To discuss the 1min There is no absolute contraindication for hemodialysis, but in order to guarantee the lectur
contra- safety of patients in the process, there are some relative contraindications :
indications of  Severe hypotension, shock and anemia
HD  Arrhythmia, heart insufficiency or myocardial infarction
 Intracranial hemorrhage or too high intracranial pressure
 Advanced malignant tumor
 Severe hemorrhagic tendency
 Uncontrolled serious Diabetes
 Old high-risk patients, uncooperative mental disorder patients

6 To enlist the 1/2m  VASCULAR ACCESS: Takes about 6 wks for maturation. lectur
vascular access in 1. AV FISTULA
for HD 2. AV GRAFTS
3. 3. CENTRAL VENOUS ACCESS

7 To describe the 1min Advantages lectur

advantages and  Excellent patency
disadvantages of  Lower rates of complications (infection, steal, stenosis)
AV fistulas
Disadvantages
 Long maturation time
 Occasional failure to develop

8 To describe the 1min  Keep access clean at all times. lectur

care of AV  Use access site only for dialysis.
fistula  No blood samples or IV Injection from fistula arm
 Be careful not to injure or cut the access.
 Arm should not be used for recording BP.
 Notify physician if any bleeding/ absence of bruit/thrill.
 Hand exercises promote fistula maturation.
 Don’t wear jewelry or tight clothes over access site.
 Don’t sleep with access arm under your head or body.
 Don’t lift heavy objects or put pressure on your access arm.
 Palpate-Thrill, Auscultate-Bruit

9 To describe AV   A vascular access that connects an artery to a vein using a synthetic tube. lectur
graft  It can be used sooner after placement, often within 2 or 3 weeks.
