Tensile / Torsional Limits

Tool Joint Tensile Yield 1,249,755 lbf 1,249,755 lbf
with 0.85 Safety Factor 1,062,290 lbf
Tool Joint Torsional Yield 51,710 ft.lbf 47,302 ft.lbf
with 0.85 Safety Factor 40,210 ft.lbf

Tube Tensile Yield 712,070 lbf 560,764 lbf

with 0.85 Safety Factor 476,650 lbf
Tube Torsional Yield 74,100 ft.lbf 58,110 ft.lbf
with 0.85 Safety Factor 49,400 ft.lbf

NOTE: The above max values can only be used when there is a single load case. For combined loads
(Torque & Tension), these values decrease thus reference "Combined Loading Charts" on page 3.

Handling Equipment
Elevators must be equipped with an 18° internal taper for lifting the box end tool joints.

Collapse Resistance
For consideration only during BOP Pressure Testing or when tension loads are negligible.
Tube may collapse if the externally applied pressure differential across the tube exceeds 10,024 psi.
(9,022 psi with Safety Factor of 0.90).

Make-up Torques
Make Make-up torque values given are calculated using the standard API formula taken from API
Recommended Practice 7G 16th Edition, 1998.

NEW Recommended* PREMIUM

XXX” XXX”
(8” OD) XXX” (Min OD)
DP Make up Torque (MUT) XXX ft.lbf XXX ft.lbf XXX ft.lbf XXX ft.lbf XXX ft.lbf

* The recommended make-up torque is based on a review of Delivery Ticket XYZ for drillpipe
dispatched to the XXX in XYZ, which found the minimum OD of the tooljoints to be XXX”.

Care is necessary if the drill pipe is being screwed onto another component (eg Crossover, HWDP,
Pup joint) to ensure that ID & OD dimensions are checked and material specification differences are
taken into account with the MUT.

Note on Interchangeability of Connections

q When considering running ‘interchangeable’ connection combinations it is essential to accurately
measure the two components prior to make-up. Ensure they are reworked in accordance with NS-
2™ and API Spec 7.
q If using mixed interchangeable connections, only apply the lower MUT value associated with the
API connection, as this will be the weaker component.
