FRACTIONS AND DECIMALS
A. How well have you learnt about fractions?
Fractions mean just like they sound. They are numbers that aren't
whole; they are a fraction or a part of something bigger. Fractions
have two entities, a numerator (the part) and a denominator (the
whole).

● The three types of fractions are:

Fractions whose numerators are less
than their denominators are called
proper fractions.

Fractions whose numerators are
either equal to or greater than the
denominators are called an improper
fraction
(Numerator = denominator or,
Numerator > denominator)

D. How well have you learnt about decimal numbers
Numbers with a point are decimal numbers. E.g. weight, height and
interest rate in the following examples.

What is the use of

Decimals?

Weighing Machine

i. Addition of decimal numbers

To add any two or more decimals (decimal numbers), follow the

following step.
Step 1: Line up all the numbers vertically so that all the decimal points
lie on a single vertical line.
Step 2: Add extra zero to the right of the number so that each number
has the same number of digits to the right of the decimal place.

11
UNIT RIVISION COURSE
FRACTIONS AND DECIMALS
Step 3: Add the given numbers as you would do for whole numbers.
Place the decimal point of the result acquired in line with the other
decimal points.
Example:
Add
92.59 + 4.7
Solution

1. 92.59 Notice the decimal points in the line.

4.7

2. 92.59 We added this 0, so both numbers have 2 digits to the right

4.70 of the decimal point.
3.
1
92.59
+4.70
97.29

Example : 0.07 + 0.008 is equal to

(a) 0.15 (b)0.015 (c)0.078 (d)0.78

Solution:
0.070
+ 0.008

0.078

UNIT RIVISION COURSE
FRACTIONS AND DECIMALS
Example : Decimal 16.25 is equal to the fraction __ ?
Solution: For converting this into a fraction, we can multiply and divide
both numerator and denominator by 100.

16.25×100 1625
=
100 100
Now we can write 1625 =65×25 and 100 =25×4
So we get a fraction

1625 65×25 65
= =
100 4×25 4

ii. Subtraction of decimal numbers

Subtraction of decimals can be in a similar method. We line up the

decimals vertically, put extra zeros to the right, and subtract
downward. More specifically, follow the steps below
Step 1: Line up all the numbers vertically so that all decimal points lie
on the same vertical line.

Step 2: Add extra zero to the right of the given numbers so that each
number has the same number of digits to the right of the decimal
place.

Step 3: Subtract the numbers as you would do for whole numbers.

Place the decimal points of the result in line with the other decimal
points.

13

Example : Subtract 34.91 - 14.214

34.910 { We added this 0, so both numbers have 3 digits to the right

- 14.21 Of the decimal point}
20.696

Example 10 15.8 – 6.73 is equal to

(a) 8.07 (b)9.0 (c)9.13 (d)9.25

Solution:
Converting given decimals into like decimals, we get 15.8 as 15.80
and 6.73 as 6.73.
15.80
- 6.73
9.07

iv. Multiplication of decimal number:

Just follow the steps:
• Normally multiply, ignore the decimal points. Then put the
decimal point in the answer - it will have as many decimal places
as the two original numbers combined.

start with: 0.003 × 0.11

multiply without decimal points: 3 × 11 = 33
0.003 has 3 decimal places, and 0.11 has 2 decimal
place, so the answer has 5 decimal places: 0.00033

Example 10: The side of an equilateral triangle is 3.25 cm. Find its
perimeter.
Solution: All the sides of an equilateral triangle are equal. So, length of
each side = 3.25 cm
Thus, perimeter = 3 × 3.25 cm = 9.75 cm
Example 11: The length of a rectangle is 5.1 cm, and its breadth is 2.4
cm. What is the area of the rectangle?
Solution: Length of the rectangle = 5.1 cm
Breadth of the rectangle = 2.4 cm
Therefore, area of the rectangle = 5.1 × 2.4 cm2 = 12.24 cm2

v. Division of decimal numbers

To divide a decimal by another decimal:

To divide decimal numbers:
i. Multiply the divisor by the required number of 10's as until we get a
whole number.
ii. Don't forget to multiply the dividend by the same number of 10's.
Example: Divide 0.539 by 0.11

move 2 spaces

0.539 5.39 53.9

0.11 1.1 11

move 2 spaces

After these steps divide normally

Example 12: Each side of a regular polygon is 1.25 cm in length. The

perimeter of the polygon is 25 cm. How many sides does the polygon
have?
Solution: The perimeter of a regular polygon is the sum of the lengths
of all its equal sides = 25 cm
Length of each side = 1.25 cm
25
Thus, the number of sides =
1.25

The polygon has 20 sides.

Example 13: A bike covers a distance of 47 km in 1.2 hours. What is the
average distance covered by it in 1 hour?
Solution: Distance covered by the bike = 47 km.
The time required to cover this distance = 1.2 hours.
47
So distance covered by it in 1 hour = = 39.1667 km

p and q both are natural numbers.

• A fraction with numerator less than the denominator is called a

• For adding and subtracting unlike fractions, we take LCM of the

• Multiplication of fractions is commutative as well as associative.

• Product of a fraction and 0 is always 0.

• Product of a fraction and 1 is the fraction itself.

• To divide a number or a fraction by another fraction, we multiply

it by the reciprocal of the fraction.

• Fractions with denominators 10, 100 or 1000 are called decimals.

Decimals having the same number of decimal places are called

• For multiplying two decimals, we multiply just as we multiply whole
numbers. To place the decimal point, find the sum of the number
of decimal places in each factor.

• While dividing a decimal number with 10, 100, 1000, etc., the
decimal is moved to the left by the number of places equal to the
number of zeroes in a division.

• For dividing a decimal number by a whole number, place the

decimal point in the quotient before taking down the tenths digit
and divide as you would divide whole numbers.

• While dividing a decimal by a decimal, first change the divisor into
