Engineering is the use and application of science and mathematics to provide solutions to the
numerous problems in the world (Lucas, 2022). As a profession, engineers are generally involved in small-
scale and large-scale projects in several fields like construction, computer, electronics, and electrical.
In a project, it is usually the engineers’ job to define project scope and other requirements, design
equipment, and ensure that the needed quality and standards are met. To do this, all works and tasks
within the group must be directed, coordinated, and focused in achieving business objectives and in
delivering a successful project (Heerden, 2020). This is where management comes into the picture. The
engineers working in a project may have all the technical knowledge and skills, but without proper
management and coordination, the project will still inevitably fail. This is because engineering projects
require proper risk, time, and staff management, data handling, costing and budgeting, supply chain
management, sustainability, and decision-making skills to keep the whole project in the right track.
Specifically, management is relevant in the field of engineering for the following (Heerden, 2020):
1. Team alignment. In a given project, the engineers must fully understand what the clients
demand. In addition to this, engineers must be able to manage their team by ensuring that
the whole team understands the business and project objectives. With this, people’s thinking
and the total engineering effort will be aligned throughout the whole project period.
2. Scope of facility. An engineer must be able to execute proper costing and scheduling. Proper
management in these areas ensure that the construction costs are within boundaries, and
that schedules are productive and efficient.
3. Engineering execution plan. An engineering execution plan arranges everything required to
complete a project such as methods, procedures, decision points, decision makers, and
resources. With proper management, the engineers would be able to come up with a cost-
efficient and time-efficient execution plan.
4. Technical risk management. In a project, problems that may cause delays are almost
inevitable. These problems may cause a severe impact on the project finances or in the
company itself. Thus, proper identification and mitigation of risks will greatly help in
mitigating or minimizing the effects of these potential risks.
5. Philosophies, standards, and specifications. To ensure that the project met the required
quality and standards set in a code or by the client, a thorough quality assurance plan must
be developed. This quality assurance plan will allow the non-conformities to be identified
early on with adequate time for changes and adjustments. With this, late discoveries of critical
defects that leads to long project delays will be prevented.
In conclusion, management will ensure that all the efforts in an engineering project are
coordinated and focused in the right direction. With this, the cost and time to successfully finish a project,
that also meets the required quality and specifications, will be lessened. As an engineer, both technical
and management skills are needed to execute a project that is well-planned, time-bound, efficient, and
of great quality.
