Bi-Axial Column Design

The document outlines the design specifications for a bi-axial column, including material properties, member dimensions, load data, and flexural design checks. It details the calculations for moment carrying capacity, axial load capacity, and the required area of steel reinforcement, concluding that 6 bars of 16 mm and 8 bars of 20 mm are necessary. Additionally, it includes shear reinforcement checks and spacing requirements for ties.

Bi-Axial Column Design

1) Material Properties:
Grade of Concrete (fck) = 25 N/mm2
Grade of Steel (fy) = 500 N/mm2
2) Member Properties:
Length of the Column ( L) = 2.43 m
Depth of Column (D) = 600 mm
Width of Column (B) = 400 mm
Depth of Beam = 900 mm
Effective Length Factor (Kx) = 0.79
Effective Length Factor (Ky) = 0.91
Unsupported Length of Column (l) = 1.53 m
Effective Length of Column (Lex) = 1.92 m
Effective Length of Column (Ley) = 2.21 m
Clear Cover = 40 mm
Effective Cover = 60 mm
3) Load Data:
Axial Load of Column (Pu) = 240 kN
Moment about X-axis
Mx1 = 65 kN.m
Mx2 = 0 kN.m
Moment about Y-axis
My1 = 25 kN.m
My2 = 0 kN.m
3) Flexural Design of Column:
Slenderness Check
lex/Dx = 3.20 < 12, Design as Short Column
ley/Dy = 5.53 < 12, Design as Short Column
Minimum Eccentricity
exmin = 20 mm (l/500) + (D/30) <
eymin = 18.19 mm (l/500) + (B/30) <
Moment due to Eccentricity
Muxe = 4.37 kN.m = P u * ey
Muye = 4.80 kN.m = P u * ex

Hence, Design Moment Mux = 65 kN.m

Muy = 25 kN.m

For Bi-Axially Loaded Column,

Assume Percentage of Steel (Pt) = 1.5 %
Gross Area (Ag) = 240000 mm2

Moment Carriyng Capacity of Column

Along X-Axis
d'/D = 0.10
Pt/fck = 0.06
Pu/fck.b.D = 0.04
Mu/fck.b.D2 = 0.08
Mux1 = 288 kN.m
Along Y-Axis
d'/D = 0.15
Pt/fck = 0.06
Pu/fck.b.D = 0.04
Mu/fck.b2.D = 0.08
Muy1 = 192 kN.m

Check for Interaction Formula,

Axial Load Capacity of Column (Puz) = 4009.50 kN = (0.45.fck.Ac) + (0.75.fy.Ast)
Pu/Puz = 0.06
Mu/Mux1 = 0.225694444
Mu/Muy1 = 0.130208333
∝n = 0.6 As Per Graph

(Mu/Mux1)∝n + (Mu/Muy1)∝n = 0.70 ≤1

Provide, 6 No. of 16 mm bars as longitudinal reinforcement.

&
8 No. of 20 mm bars as longitudinal reinforcement.

4) Check for Shear:

Design Shear Reinforcement = 665 mm2
No. of Legs Provided = 2
Size of Ties = 8 mm
Area of Shear Reinforcemnet = 100.48 mm2
Spacing of Ties Required = 151.10 mm
Spacing of Ties Provided = 100 mm
