Best Friends
Unusual friendships make really good stories and they
warm your heart. When the friendship is between
different animals, the stories are even more incredible.
A video of a dolphin named Duggie and a dog called Ben
has been an Internet hit for some time now.
The inhabitants of Tory Island, off the coast of County
Donegal in Ireland, first saw Duggie the dolphin in the
spring of 2006. Soon after Duggie’s appearance, Ben the
dog began swimming out to the dolphin and playing with
her. This continued for some time until one day Duggie
disappeared.
Workers at the Dolphin Reef in Eilat, Israel, reported
a similar story. According to them, a dog called Joker
appeared at the reef one day. For several days, he sat
near the water and watched the dolphins. Then one day,
he jumped into the water and started swimming with
them. From then on, Joker walked several kilometres
every day from his home to the reef in order to swim with
the dolphins.
So, what is the reason for the attraction between dogs
and dolphins? Maybe the answer is the dolphin’s brain.
Dolphins are probably the most intelligent creatures in
the ocean. In fact, some people have called them
“non-human people” because their intelligence is so
close to ours. Maybe dogs are attracted to dolphins for
the same reason they like us. After all, it’s possible to
have more than one best friend!

2 Duggie and Ben swam together for over
a year.
3 Joker started swimming with the dolphins
on his first day at the reef.
4 Joker lived at Dolphin Reef.
5 Dolphins are almost as clever as people.
